I am planning on getting a warn m8000 to mount it on a TJM 15. I just realized I need a fairlead too. What kind of fairlead would you guys/gals recommend? Does Hawse make good fairlead? I found a deal for a warn m8000 + Hawse fairlead shipped for $570. Is that a good deal?? Thanks !!

When I do the "get a winch" deal all over again I'm not even going to bother putting the steel cable on there. Get some Amsteel blue line and an aluminum fairlead, Rockstomper has some great prices on both, and save yourself a bunch of weight, the chance to kill yourself with steel cable snapping, and the headache of getting the stuff on the spool.

Roller is good if you're pulling form extreme angles.

No - at least not a Warn winch. You need to buy a package and sell off the parts you don't want.

I recently bought a 9.5ti and sold the fairlead already - I'll be selling the steel cable too since I got synth rope on a group buy prior to even buying my winch.

Hawse is not a brand, but a type of fairlead. There are two types of fairleads: Hawse and Roller. Roller has large rollers for the cable to run over - widely used for steel cable, not normally used for synth (especially after being used for steel cable - risk of burrs damaging synth). Hawse is not mechanical like the roller, but is more static - basically a guide for the rope to slide over.

Some Warn units come with a steel fairlead suitable for steel cable. Most guys with synth rope run an aluminum or UHMW (plastic) fairlead. These are both better than the steel Hawse fairlead for synth rope.

New Warn roller fairleads purchased separately from a retailer are around $115 each, while alum. or UHMW fairleads are less than a 1/3 of that.

Stupid me!! I thought Hawse is a brand since I have no experience with winch at all. Thanks Cebby!! Seems like yo guys are switching over to the syn rope and aluminium fairlead. I think I will go that route too. THanks again!!

Shane is planning to sell some of his syn rope so you might as well take advantage of that too. Just buy a new fairlead for the winch and then replace it.

Seriously consider the UHMW fairlead with a synth rope. The aluminum will cut right through it if it gets even the tiniest scratch in it (and it will...)

I just bought a UHMW fairlead off of eBay to go along with the rope that I will be getting for the winch that I don't have.

I'd recommend you don't get a TJM. More than once I've read accounts of the winch about pulling through the fairlead opening or otherwise bending some brace or bracket. At the least, I'd be prepared to sort out some extra bracing for it.

This is news to me. Care to post some links where this occured? I have a hard time picturing an entire winch getting pulled through a hole a bit larger than a bannana...

Well...sorry, too literal I guess...not through-through but enough to buckle the bumper at the opening. I understand they will send you the frame designed for the aluminum bumpers, but to me that's a workaround and not a fix.

Hmmm.. interesting reading. I'd point out though that the first two threads are distinctly talking about the T-100 bumper, and the third one isn't clear because the writer owns both a 4Runner and a T-100. That 3rd thread is also 2 years old, and I'm pretty sure there have been design changes in the bumpers since then.

Also, the TJM site says that the "winch kit" is not applicable for the 3rd gen 4Runner bumper.

From this (and other wanderings), I would say that the original T-100 version of the T15/T17 are _not_ winch rated, but that the 4Runner seems to be.

Note that the "new" page on the TJM site shows a _NEW_ T15/1T17 for the T-100 that clearly states it's winch rated.


I've written to TJM asking for clarification on the 3rd gen 4Runner bumpers and I'll post the response here.
