Welding a V6 third
Who here has done a Lincoln locker on a V6 third? I see that you cant just pull the third member and weld it up because you cant get to the spider gears. How much work are we talking about to get the spider gears out and get them back in once they're welded.
Thanks

On the 4cly thirds you can get to the gears easily.
Yeah a spool isnt expensive but you have to set up your gears again. Im looking for a free locker that can be done in an evening. Just curious to see if anyone on here has done it.

I have done it a few times for others. Toss it in the BBQ to pre heat it as a whole. Weld the crap out of it then let it cool SLOWLY don't put any water on it. Actually the slower you can cool it the better. Maybe put it back into the BBQ and then turn the BBQ off so they can cool down together slowly.
Be sure to put a crappy ring gear on to keep the weld spatter off the mating surface. This one was run with 38.5 swampers on an 85 4runner and I never got any calls on the welding or the 5.29's until he decided he had more gears to set up in another truck

You dont really have to "Set up your gears again" as your pinion depth will remain unchanged and thats the longest part of a gear set up. You will need to swap 2 bearings then reset you backlash and carrier bearing Pre-load. With the proper tools thats a 10 min job once the spool is mounted.

I have never run a welded diff to be honest. I do think that a full spool would be more predictable than a lunch box style locker on the street but it will wear tires faster and require more throttle when turning to keep rolling. I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to ride quality so I run a TruTrac in the rear of my truck because I drive it every day. I have often pondered swapping it out for a full Detroit but I really haven't had any reason to justify it. The Trutrac has never let me down. Part of the success of the TT in my application is with the dual cases I can pull my E-brake 100% to force a locking effect and not kill the motor in 4.7 or 10.7 low range.
If I found a good deal on a full Detroit for my V6 carrier I would swap them out and just sell the TruTrac but I have had no such luck so far.
