Something wrong with this bearing?

Yeah there should be roller bearings in the spaces. Burned up a bearing on the way home from work. I have a ford 9" rear axle. I'm starting to hate ford for their design of axle bearings. This one has a seal on the outside of the bearing and allows the gear oil to lubricate the bearing. Well the seals seem to wear out and you have to pull the bearings in order to put new ones in. This requires pulling and pressing...geez... If any of you are looking at using a ford 9" axle...use a newer model than around 85 that has the axle seal in the axle tube....

Haven't had the problem with my 9" but for the life of me I can't remember where the seal is on mine. Seems to me it is inboard of the seal and rides on the bearing retainer. Hmmm, I think I'll have to pull an axle and see.

Is that a small bearing?

Its the bigger bearing (part# A-20) I think. It has 31 spline axles. Yeah yours is probably the better design with the seal on the inside of the tube which seals the gear oil from the bearing. Originally i thought i had those too and used the inner seal. Thats why one of the bearings burned up. It didn't have gear oil lubricating it. I'll be replacing the leaking seal tonight.

Do you have any pics of your 9" on your truck? I would be interested to see how the bearings are setup on yours. Maybe i could find a way to use sealed bearings and put in the inner axle seal.

Got a few, but none show the bearing. They're mostly shots I took during installation. I do know that I'm using tapered roller bearings not ball and I'm thinking now that they are lubed by gear oil which means an outer seal. Too damn cold and snowy today to pull an axleshaft to be sure.

Well its good to hear they do last a while since you haven't had to replace them. Maybe once I get this last seal in, it will last a good while.

On a different note, did you install a drain plug in your axle? Or do you pull the carrier to change the fluid. I'm thinking about putting one in just to save some time in the long run.

The machinist who did the narrowing for me also added a drain plug. It is a flush-mounted 3/8" NPT plug.
