Most Important upgrade

What is the most important upgrade for offroad performance? I was figuring a locking differential, but I wanted to hear what you guys have to say. This is my first post on this forum, and I have never done any really hardcore offroading. So I apologize ahead of time for my lack of knowledge.

Experience. Know what your limits are and then you'll have a much better grasp of what modifications to do.

I think most people will say tires 1st.

Tires look cool but a locker will get you places.

I've already got the locker so my next mods are going to be shocks and springs and then by October it'll be a set of Nitto TerraGrapplers.

Assuming the rig had reasonable tires, my vote is a rear locker.

It depends on the terrain...if mud is involved then appropriate tires would be my first choice, if you primarily wheel on rocks then a locker for sure and crawler gears. If its a mix of both, then a locker and tires.

my favorite upgrade is dual transfer cases on my truck.

Trucks with the auto trannys benefit from a external tranny cooler too.

So lockers are probaly the best upgrade. I've messed arround going through ditches and stuff and when ever I get a wheel off the ground all it does is spin, so I figured that would be a good one to go with. So how do you find out your gearing for putting in lockers? As for the experience aspect, where did you guys go when you first started? I live in central North Carolina, and I'm not to sure of any places to go for "Rookie" drivers in my area.
