1988 toyota tire size??

I bought a 1988 Toyota 22re 4x4 dirt cheap recently, fuel injected, 5-speed manual, lock-outs, spare motor and a few extra parts. I'm not used to these trucks, how peppy are they supposed to be and will a stock 22re do ok with 35 inch tires? Will it be too hard on my driveline? I can get them to fit with a little mod., but wonder if the stock motor and driveline will be able to handle them. I ask because I can get them pretty cheap off of a guy I know but don't want to buy and not use them.

I ran 35X12.50s on my 1988 4runner for a while, it will handle the 35's ok. I dont know about with a manual cuz mine is automatic but dont count on climbing any rocks or steep hills haha. Everybody suggests 5.29 gearing with 35's and a manual. I didnt have any running gear issues though. You might burn your clutch out or something though?somebody will chip in though, and blast you with the regearing speech. Also people might say your IFS cannot handle the 35's, but with stock gearing you wont have the torque to turn your 35's fast enough to break anything anyways.

They are slow in stock form and increasing the tire size without regearing make them even slower

It's wouldn't be street worthy with 35" tires. Barely I think with 33"s. The limiting factors are primarily the gear ratio and the CV strength. If you regear to 5.29 or 5.71s then you can fit 35"s I think, though I'll have to let someone who's got that config. to confirm.

I am under the impression that 35's break a lot of CV axles. Perhaps you'd be best to go with 4.88s and 33's and keep the front suspension at stock height.

you'll be fine. Be careful with your cv's but other than that it'll be fine, no race car but you can to the speed limit.

You will be able to do the speed limit. I did highway speeds with my 35's and stock gearing. And your CV's will be able to take it because you wont have the power to turn your front tires barely so their will be no torque on them. The cv's will start breaking if you slap some 5.29s in their cuz you will enough torque at the wheel to spin them in 4wd. With mine I couldnt even tell i was in 4wd. I could go some places but steep hill climbs and rock climbs are out of the question unless you want to smell some intense buring clutch. One time of the top of my head i accidently drove into a ditch during some night wheeling, i didnt have the power to back out so i had to rock myself out, thats the sort of thing youll deal with. Functionable road vehicle sure, 4wd pretty much no go.Its fun to have the big tires though untill you can afford to sas or regear.
