Armor (sliders, skids, bumpers, in that order)
Lockers/gears

But here's the thing - how challenging of trails are you willing to do in a truck that big that you're likely still mkaing payments on?

For what the above is going to cost, you could buy a beater.

sliders for sure are a must if you will be anywhere near rocks or trees.

lockers lockers lockers best offroad mod you can do.

id also do sliders to keep it pretty and then do something about your bumpers to increase approach angles.

with a new truck like that, you'd probably be best off spending money on armor. As others have noted, sliders and bumpers would be a good start. In terms of increasing traction, a locker would be your best bet.

Sliders and Locker...one without the other is like having an alarm clock but no job.

Sliders and Locker...one without the other is like is like pulling the trigger, only to hear a "click".

Sliders and Locker...one without the other is like being fully armored but remain motionless.

Sliders and Locker...one without the other is like having a one night stand, you wake up the next day and forget her name.

edited title to better reflect the questions

A set of heavy duty skid plates. The factory ones are crap when you start hitting the rocks, and they don't provide adequate coverage either. IMHO.

Most important is your attitude: if you wheel it, damage will happen!!!

after doing a few thousand in damage on my '05 (now gone) that is why I bought my '81...But the Power of the 4.0 was awesome off road

To the OP: in addition to the previously mentioned mods, swap your AT's for some MT's.
Like AJ mentioned, the stock skid plates are a joke, a piece of plastic for the gas tank...What was Toyota thinking. If I still had my '05 and was going to wheel it I would invest in this skid plate from bud built: http://www.budbuilt.com/new/05+Tacoma.html I have his dual transfer case mount/skid plate on my 81 and it will support the weight of the truck...awesome piece of armor..
