FJ80 axle questions

I'm wanting to learn everything i can about FJ80 Axles. I'm considering buying some for my Jeep XJ but don't know much about them. What are the strengths, weeknesses in them? Any certain years/types i should stay away from?

What exactly did you want to know?

They are strong. 5" birf instead of the 3.5 in mini trucks. If you find the right years, the rears are Full Float with disk brakes. Should handle 37" tires stock just fine. To be safe, upgrade to longfields in front, and poly performance chromo shafts in the rear.

Both front and rear came with electric locking differentials on some models. Both front and rear have offset diffs to the passenger side. Meaning, if you have a center drop t-case, and you drive on the road, you are going to get driveline vibrations pretty bad if you use the rear axle. I can't remember what drop the XJ's are in the front, but I thought they were passenger.

63" WMS to WMS in the front, 62.5 in the rear, IIRC.

Front is a high pinion (30% stronger) 8" diff, rear is an 8.875" regular diff. The rear is really strong.

Front high steer can be done with OTT arms (require machining at OTT= have to send your knuckles out) and leaf springs. Slee high steer requires links as leafs will not fit. Figure 6-700 for the steering.

More can be found on IH8MUD, and Pirate.

Jeep used FJ80 axles? Find that pretty hard to believe.

enclosed knuckle differential

the enclosed knuckle diff was used by Jeep, International,GMC, Ford, Chevy,Dodge, The design was then sold to Toyota all built by Dana corp the replication by Toyota is so close parts are interchangable. These differentials are nothing new they been around for 70 years.

Cool!

I'm always eager to learn new things. For my own amusement and piqued curiosity, would you mind sending me a few links so I can learn more?

Thanks!

more info on enclosed knuckles

Axleike, send your e-mail adress and I will forward scans of shop manuals and a flyer on the proper lube. I am not computer savy enough to post the info because evidently it needs to converted to text to post on this here website.
check out militaryvehicles@krause.com a fellow by the name of Steve Turchet wrote an article on this subject I have e-mailed him my info also there are postings on IH8mudd in 60 wagons under steering knuckle lubracant that are very enlightening on this subject granted it has a negative vibe but I am trying to tell guys something they dont want to here. thanks Frank
