the only thing that scares me about a hydraulic winch is having to pull myself out if was in danger of hydrolocking or at an angle that my engine couldn't run at. however, it seems that the benefits outweigh the problems
How you figure? Not only does the engine have to be running, so forget righting yourself if you flopped or pulling yourself up a steep incline, but do you even have power steering being that you drive a 79 pickup? Just having to put a pump on there would be a PITA worthy of not wanting to go that route.

I have seen PS pumps go out on the trail. I have seen them start to shoot fuild. I would never run a hydro winch, I see no advantage and many disadvantages...

Nor would I. There are other options that are strong good bumpers that are not ARBs or TJMs and much less expensive.

400 bucks right there. That is 250 less than what I paid for my ARB I believe and I would trust it many times more than I would a ˟˟˟˟tybuilt. There are many more options like this out there, you just have to look around.

So for well under $1000 bucks you can get a good bumper (All-Pro) and a sweet winch (Warn M8000). I think that combo will serve you much, MUCH better. Before you were asking us if you should spend almost that much on just your winch (750 for an M8000???). Trust me, there is little worse than ripping your winch off your truck at a very inopportune time.

EDIT: I just looked up the price of the Smittybilt (265 without shipping). The All-Pro is DEFINATELY worth the extra 135 for the piece of mind it will give you. We helped you save 250 on the good winch, take half of that and put it toward the good bumper. You won't regret it, not to mention the A-P one looks 10 times better....

I read a few years back that the Toyota power steering pump doesn't put out enough PSI to run a hydro winch.

I would never run one for the exact same reasons as stated here.
At least an electric one will run with the engine off for awhile.

I have used mine a few times with the engine off and it worked perfectly.

884runner,
If you decide to keep the tube bumper & do put a 8000lb winch on it I would take it to a reputable welding shop & have them add some more brackets or something to secure it to the frame better or you will pull it right off the truck & possibly injure yourself or someone else.

well, i'm just in the drooling stage right now...not settled on what i'm gonna get. i would like the hydraulic winch, but the idea of dumping fluid everywhere scares me a bit

i do have a ps pump(stock) but i don't use it right now since the steering box has a shot seal and pisses out fluid as fast as i can put it in. i don't think i'm going to use the pump for steering when i go to crossover with an ifs box, so i was thinking it could possibly run a winch

electric is still a viable option for me, a friend of mine is going to put a 12,000lb milemarker hydraulic on his cj5 when he gets it trail ready again, so i'll have to wait and see how it works for him

44runner: I was going to get the all pro until it was going to cost me 420 plus 60 for shiping. that's 180 more than what i paid. i know the web site said 399$ for it but when i called them and asked them about it that's the price they quoted me on. And as for the winch costing 750$ i would never pay that much. I don't even think i would pay more than 550$ for a winch.
92 Toyota: that's a good idea. When ever i do get my winch i will ahve to do that. I'll just go get trouble spots re enforced.
But the offer is still open to anyone who thinks that i need a new better bumper. You buy it and i'll put it on right away!
