Question Which Winch?

Well, I think my mod bug is growing.... I'm strongly considering selling off my subs and amp to buy a winch. What does everybody recommend and where can I find the best prices?

And what model? Where to buy?

I was looking at the M8000.... I'm thinking that I'll only get around $500 for my subs and amp... so I don't want to be paying too much out of pocket. I'd like to keep it under $800 for sure.

Warn is by far the best winch if you will be using it often. But they are also some of the most expensive one's out there.I bought a Ramsey REP8000E from www.ntwonline.com for $399,and it serves my needs fine. Not fast by any means but still pulls 8000lbs(more than any Toyota should need). You can try here www.piercesales.com they have some big winches as well as some smaller ones.

mile marker

i'm think about a mile marker electric 8000 for 399$ or the 9000 for 456$. You can buy them at 4wheelparts or order off almost anywhere online. Small question? do i need a winch bumper or can i just get a mounting plate and put it on my stock 88 bumper with lightbar?

MileMarker winches are identical to Ramsey REP winches. As far as mounting them, just make sure they are mounted to the frame with good mounting brackets, otherwise you may pull it off the front & hurt someone(or yourself).

I am assuming that a synthetic winch line will fit like a milemarker or ramsey winch as well. I am guessing all winch cables attach the same. I mean it would be great if i could get a non warn winch and synthetic line for the same price as just a warn would be.

I have a Milemarker E8000 and 125' of 5/16" Masterpull rope with a locking hook, Spidertrax aluminum fairlead and a in cab winch control. Milemarkers are slow, but DON'T overheat like WARN winches do.

Well, I like the thought of not paying any money out of pocket...

So what are the +/- 's of synthetic rope?

Anything else I should know?

Synthetic winch rope advantages:
-Lighter (6 lbs with hook vs 18 lbs for steel with hook)

-Stronger (smaller synthetic rope is stronger than larger steel rope. 5/16" steel WARN rope breaking strength is 9800lbs. Milemarker synthetic rope breaking strength is 14500 lbs)

-Steel rope stores energy. If it breaks, it whips around and will break your legs or kill you, or cause serious damage. Synthetic rope will maybe whip a little, but most likely just drop to the ground. It doesn't weigh anything, so it won't hurt you like steel will.

-Steel rope frays and will slice open your hands if not careful. Synthetic won't.

-Steel rope will kink if not carefully handled when spooling the rope onto or off the winch drum. Synthetic rope can be spooled onto the drum with little regard to careful tight wraps.

-Synthetic rope can be respliced if it breaks or gets cut. (Emil at Masterpull will gladly teach you how if you like)

CONS:
Synthetic rope is more susceptible to getting but on sharp objects such as rocks, or vehicles.

Warn claims that the wire rope is an important part of the winch cooling system. They claim that it acts as a heatsink to draw heat away. My milemarker hasn't overheated at all with wire (came stock with 3/8" steel rope that is bigger and stronger than the rope that comes on all the 9000 and below lb winches) or even the synthetic rope.

If I forget anything, someone please chime in!

I'm running a Warn XD9000, and I'm very happy with it.

I also am running the Ramsey Wireless Remote control with it.
Info on that is in the Tech section here, and on my site under mods.

I have some good links on my website also for synthetic rope articles.
They are in my mods section on page III under the synthetic rope installation area.

Syn line is the only way to go.
Very safe, and won't snap & whip like a steel line does, which can be deadly.

I'm getting excited.... I've had an empty winch bumper for a while now..... I'll have to get the bumper sandblasted and re-powder coated too while I'm at it. And I like the thought of not paying anything out of pocket.

OH OH... I just realized something else. Samson Rope is the company that makes the AmSteel blue rope. They are just down the road from me, and I know a few people that work there...... I'm going to see if I can get the hookup!

Just want to be on this thread for when I finally get one. I'm thinking about getting one that goes into the hitch so I can put in the rear or the front, either way it's needed at the time. Anyone else do this on custom bumpers?

I don't know if anyone has done what I plan on doing....

I'm going to put a snatch block at: The front, middle, back, and each side. Then I'm going to come up with some sort of bolt on attachment(removable) to the front bumber that will allow me to put another one 6 inches out. This way I can run the winch cable out either side or out the rear. I still have to do some thinking on the best way of hooking it all up, but I believe it should be fairly straightforward.

Multi-mount winch mounts are great for moving your winch from front to rear as needed, but just make sure your receiver hitch can handle the load. Also watch angle pulls I've seen multi-mounts bend on hard side pulls.
onetrick,
With all those snatch blocks your be able to pull a freight train out of"Lake Elmers Glue".Just remember 1 snatch block slows down your line speed & doubles your pulling power,so make sure your winch mount & cable is 100%.

This kinda relates but not really, My dad had a PTO driven winch mounted in the bed of an old ford he had. The winch actually sat down through a hole in the bed so it was low enough that he could run the cable through a swivel block and out any side of the vehicle. And being a pto driven winch, when the clutch was let out the wheels and the winch would all turn , so you could have awesome pulling power.

I had thought about getting a PTO or a hydrolic winch.... but two things deter me.

1. The price.

2. What the heck are you going to do if you engine won't start?

I guess I'd just feel safer with an electric winch.
