Who's running Camry cams in their 3.4?

Hey guys, I'm picking up a set of Camry cams today to swap into my Tacoma, who is running them, and how did you shim for the new cams? Much appreciated to all that can help.

Also interested in more info. My thought for shims, shim it as spec'ed for the camry as to avoid any interference if the cam has more lift.

x3 would like more info as well, what are the benefits to this swap on our 3.4 from the camry's 3.0 or is it from the new 3.5?

The cams are from the 3vz camry. This has been theorized for years but I have yet to see a documented case of someone actually doing it.

The idea is to give you a wider powerband without the massive power falling off up top, this should lead to a little more power in the higher RPM's as well with minor if any losses down low.

Overall it is an interesting idea although a lot of work for minor gains if you ask me unless you are inside the motor anyways. I would boost it first then worry about cams, that is when they would do the most good anyways.

Better off with the 5vz, way stronger engine, unless weight is an issue in which case the 3vz is lighter.

I like the post below, from the following thread. 3VZ-FE camry cams in a 5VZ-FE 3.4L!

The 3VZ has a distributor...

We're talking about putting 3VZ cams in a 5VZ motor...the 3VZ cams have a notch for the distributor to be driven by the end of the cam. The 5VZ has the casting in the heads for a distributor to be inserted but instead of having the hole for the distributor it is just solid aluminum. The head would have to be milled where the 'dizzy' would be inserted but then the 5VZ would, subsequently, have a distributor then...

And that is how I win...

Notice my wording in my previous post... "I will TRY to put a dizzy on a 5VZ using 3VZ parts"

AKA, the 5VZ doesn't yet have a distributor. But I will attempt to swap it over from the 3VZ...
Pretty well clears the issue up like a dark cloudy day I'd say!

Another one of the things the 3VZ-FE(or 2VZ-FE) has...that the 5VZ-FE doesn't...is ACIS(Acoustic Control Induction System) variable-length intake manifold technology.

Wow I didn't know those engines have acis. I used to autocross a modded Tercel and those acis manifolds from Japan were super sought after and really impressive.

Not sure the distributor argument is a nail int he coffin. The 3sgte also uses a distributor but you can remove it no problem as many do since the cam is still completely inside the head. The only difference is a notch on the end of the cam but that doesn't effect anything.

On second thought, I'm not sure if it's even an argument at all. Unless you were doing the opposite(trying to put 5VZ-FE cams in a 3VZ-FE).

From the same thread...

I agree.

It's more a matter of, is somoene willing to try this swap or not. Since, as far as anyone knows, they might be fully compatible/direct bolt-in. Frankly, I tend to think they would be(even based on the limited evidence available). And it might be worth the while...or not...who knows?

Here's some 3VZ-FE cams to look at.

I found this over on ToyotaNation:

3VZ-FE
Displacement: 2959cc
Intake camshaft duration: 230
Exhaust camshaft duration: 230
Valve overlap: 12 degrees
Intake valve lift: 7.85 mm
Exhaust valve lift: 7.60 mm
Intake valve diameter: 34.0 mm
Exhaust valve diameter: 27.3 mm
Intake valve overall length:
Exhaust valve overall length:
Valve stem diameter:

I couldn't find anything on the 5VZ cams.
