Wheelers offroad 15" black steelies fitting on 16" stock setup?

They say that their 15" steelies will fit on a Tacoma/4Runner with calipers made for the 16" wheels.

Is this true?

Has anyone tried them out?

I really want 15" rims/tires its so much cheaper.

It isn't the offset (although you DO have to get the correct offset) it's the inner diameter of the rim clearing the brakes. You really can't play the offset game to get the rim diameter step to miss the calipers, unless you just get lucky. Assuming the correct offset (too little and hit the tie rod ends, too much and hit the fenders with the tires when you turn) different brands of rims may be different inside - some have a smaller diameter than others and won't clear the brakes. Sometimes you can just grind the edge of the caliper casting and sometimes they just arn't gonna fit. Most steel 15s will go on most trucks that came with 16s, but not all. Far fewer 15" aluminum rims will go on due the both the thickness of the material and they usually have more 'design' to them, infringing on the inner diameter.

If in doubt, look inside your front wheels, note the clearance. Then pull of one of your rims, measure the inner diameter. Then go measure a rim that you propose putting on there.

Hmm...

Well, I cant measure or look at these rims in person, because you can buy them only online!

Guess I'll email them and ask them!

US 84 series wheels will fit. I have them on my 01 Tacoma. The American Racing 767 will not fit, at least not on mine. I believe there are people on the TTORA board running the Wheeler 15" wheels with no problems on 2001+ Tacomas. If you're looking for a black set of wheels, the US 84 series seem to be the most popular because: 1 - they fit and 2 - they're cheap.

OK not to be too much of a smartass, but it says RIGHT THERE on the Wheeler's page that they FIT and clear the calipers.

What more do people want? Plenty of folks have bought the wheeler's 15" rims and used them just fine on everything up to 2004 Tacomas.

No ˟˟˟˟.

I read it on the site too, but, I havent heard much of it, and the stuff that I DID hear said that they DID NOT fit. If guys on TTORA are riding them, maybe I'll try 'em out.

Hey, what are the US 84 series? Never herad of US.

WEll, I just read up on the TTORA site, and they said that they will clear the 16" brake calipers. However, its on tacomas and not 4runners. ...

I wonder if there is a difference in the brake caliper size? I would think not..?

I have dealt with this issue with a few different rims. I downgraded my brakes to fit a set of 15" alloy rims on my 4runner, because I had a couple of sets of almost new 33x12.50-15 tires. Anyways I went and bought a steel wheel for my spare. I found that the 15" steel didn't fit with the 4runner 15" calipers.

The resoning is that the steel wheel spokes go strait from the lug nuts to the rim.(Hitting the side of the caliper on the 4runner) The problem isn't the size of the caliper on the outside it is the shape of the caliper or exact placement itself that is different.

It's US Wheels, 84 series. They run around $35 on summitracing.com. If I were you and worried about what would fit, then I'd got to a local tire place and have them test fit certain wheels that you are looking at. I went to TireDiscounters and had some AR 767's test fitted in a 15x10 and 15x8 and neither fit my truck. I also had another brand test fitted, and they didn't fit either. I knew many people were running the US 84s, so I ordered them from summit. As for the 4Runner, I don't know what will and won't fit. Some more people are bound to chime in with what they know will fit.

Some of the 4Runners suspension packages came with larger brakes, not all are the same. That's why some find they fit and some don't. Nees1212 is correct - don't buy anything you haven't trial fitted, or at least get them to guarantee in writing they'll take em back freight included if they don't.

Ian, I have some information for you. The Tacoma brake Calipers (at least the 01's) are smaller on the Taco than they are on the 4Runner. The rotor is also smaller. (I know i bought a set of rotors and calipers from an 01 Taco and tried them). so just because they'll fit the Taco with 16's doesn't mean that they will fit a 4runner

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the info.

That really weird that they would be different...But, it looks to be that way!

So nobody is riding 15" wheels on a stock 16" 4runner? Any other information would be awesome.

Also, I emailed wheelers offroad, and they never even replied yet!

The newer production date on those US Wheels 84 will not fit on 01 and up. I have an 04 Dcab and could not get it to fit. I called US Wheels and they said their newer production of those wheels have bigger holes and the lips stick out more. So for now in the front I am running a set of old US 84 wheels and the rears I am running the newer ones. Now I must find those older ones before it's time to rotate my tires.
