water pump gasket - RTV required?
Hi,
Is it necessary to use RTV on the water pump gasket that came with the Toyota water pump I just bought? The gasket is metal with a black "rubber" seal embedded in the outline of the gasket. I have changed many water pumps over the years, but never seen anything like this.
Thanks for any imput.

I replaced the timing belt and water pump on my 99 V6 4runner a year ago (Dec 06) and was a little surprised when I got the new Toyota pump and saw the gasket material already in place. A quick call to the Toyota dealer who said no sealant required I installed it "dry". A year later I have no leaks at all.

Not correct, it won't leak either way. I agree though, it is designed not to have any sealer on it. The reason why Toyota switched to that new gasket is because they had issues with techs putting too much sealer on the mating surfaces and some of it can break loose and plug radiators and coolant passages. The new gasket eliminates this problem.

as previously stated you can use it if you want but its really not necessary. i used a little on mine because i did not have one of those new gaskets but you should be all set.

A light coat of Permatex Hylomar - part number 85249 works well with the Tacoma 2.4l metal water pump gasket. Going this route helps simply pump installation and adds a measure of protection using a light coat of sealant.
It's worked well for me thus far.

I'm preparing to replace the water pump and timing belt on my 6-cylinder '96 4Runner. The water pump I bought is made by Nissan Pump. It is made in Japan and appears to be of good quality. The mating flange on the pump is not flat but has a groove about 3mm deep that appears to be designed for an O-ring or perhaps a gasket that has a sealant bead that fits into it.
I have a question about the gasket that came with the pump. It is a flat fiber gasket. I have heard that Toyota now uses a metal gasket. Do I have the wrong gasket? Should I put a bead of Permatex Hylomar gasket sealer into the groove and use the accompanying fiber gasket?

I'll throw in my 2 cents regarding the gasket that came with the Nissam pump.
It's not made of metal like the newer ones are most likely because you have a 15 yr. old vehicle. Back then they came with what you received when you bought the pump. I wouldn't be concerned about fiber vs metal in your case.
The part I find odd is the mating surface having a 3mm valley - sounds like the same design Honda used on the older Accord/Civic pumps(maybe still do?)
I'm not sure what to say about that.
As far as what type of sealant to use goes.....
I went online to Permatex's WEB site - cust serv - something like that and posted a question - described gasket - yr/make/model/etc - received an answer back from Permatex - get it straight from the horses mouth.

After I posted I found another thread that discusses this. It appears the groove in the flange is a channel for RTV gasket material. I plan to put a bead of RTV in the channel and also use the gasket.

That groove was on my new '96 Tacoma water pump. It also came with the paper gasket. I used sealant made by 3M. Because the waterpump had a machined surface, I put small dabs at about 6 points on pump just to hold gasket in place. I then ran a small bead all the way around the pump on the paper gasket and then torqued to specifications. No leak yet.
Always remember to clean the surface before gasket applications.
