Turbo Question

Does anyone know if a turbo off an 80's model 22re/ FI will fit a 94 model 22re/ FI? I think most of the 22re blocks are the same, but I am not familiar with the Turbocharge system. I know to find a turbo is like finding a needle in a haystack; but obviously the reason I ask is because I would like to find one and put one in my 94.

Thanks,
Jason

Besides the turbo itself, you'll need to get some low-compression turbo pistons (or be prepared for massive amounts of detonation), the ECU from a turbo truck as well as the wiring harness, injectors, and miscellaneous senders, etc. Also, you'll have to add the oil line from the block to the turbo or work out your own turbo oiling. It is not the easy swap that so many seem to think it is.

i dont know about the compatibility withe newer 4cyl motors, but a turbo is not a bolt on system, you'll need alot more than just the turbocharger to make it a reliable daily driver

One of two things will happen, I will die, or the truck will be finished. I'm not sure which will be first.

probably better off doing a supra swap if you want a turbo..........much better power anyway and probably the same amount of work to do the swap

Just buy the whole truck and swap in the entire drivetrain. With a complete donor truck, you have everything you need.

it wont pass emissions that way though... well at least it wouldnt here in CA..... but the whole drivetrain swap sounds like a much better idea than a turbo swap only...

Well guess I'll call the guy and see if he still has it. I guess I could always resell it here if I decide not to swap drive trains or part it out or something.

this is one area i think i can help ya man.. i actually build supercharged and turboed 22re engines. an 86 turbo can be adapted to a 94 22ref but like it was said before you will need to either replace your PCM, or if you have the knowledge to reprogram yours to account for the oiling you will need for your new turbo.. there are some bottom end parts you will need along with a boost controller, upgraded spark, and probably new injectors. good luck with your install.. ill be checking in from time to time to see if i can lend you a hand anywhere..

rock on,
matt

Motorhead...which is cheaper...s/c or turboing a 1991 22RE? I love the truck, but hate the lack of power.

Thanks,

if you have the time you will see more power out of a supercharger.. and less problems.. you need to beef up your cam.. crank.. and better fastners. the problem is finding supers.. i get a majority of mine made by a company called Eaton. but along with supering you need to think about putting a MSD ingition system on that will control retarding the ignition. if you have any more questions just post em or email me.. good luck with the engine. o and to answer your question.. its a bit cheaper to supercharge that engine.. mostly because turbos need alot of electronic mods to make em run good.

rock on,
matt
