towing question

Hi, Ive got a 98 Tacoma 3.4l, 5-speed, 4x4. Its lifted about 3 inches with AAL in the back and Toytec Coilovers up front and its on 33" Pro Comps. Im looking at like a 6x12 enclosed cargo trailer to tow a dirtbike and atv. The trailer weighs about 1200lbs and the bikes together about 800 so looking at 2000 total. Thats well under the towing capacity so i dont see a problem. Mose will be short trips at like 60 miles or so with occasionally a trip thats about 250 miles. My concern is towing an enclosed trailer like that. If it were an open trailer, i wouldnt worry but its gonna be like a parachute. Do yall think ill have any troubles pulling that setup? Its all flat roads too, no hills or anything. Thanks for any input.

You'll be just fine.

Obviously, you could always a tranny cooler and other heavy duty stuff to help with the towing, but at that weight, I doubt you are going to need anything.

You will be perfectly fine. I towed a 6x12 trailer overloaded with at least 6000lb worth of stuff 600 miles each way with my truck. It was not real happy with it but it made it just fine. You will have to keep your speed a little lower then normal and it will feel more like 4k behind you but thats still no problem. I have towed many a car that weighed more then that.

We've got a 6x12 ft cargo trailer used for putting on bicycle races around the area. It weighs 2000-3000 lbs depending what's in it. Most of my trips are less than 30 miles, and mostly on local country roads. Occasionally I've towed it 100-200 miles on the highway.

There are two shortcomings of any V6 tow vehicle that you'll run in to: You are correct that the cargo trailer is a big parachute. This is particularly a problem on the interstate when trying to get over 60-65 mph. The other problem is on any kind of hill. Add the two things together and we're talking SLOW. There's one local highway I take with a one mile, 5% grade. The speed limit is 60 but I can't get over 40-45 for most of it. Sure, I could probably drop down a gear and run at 4000 RPM, but I'd rather go slow than put wear and tear on the engine and tranny. I guess you don't have many big hills in FL?

For my 20-30 mile trips around Spokane, my 4Runner does fine. Personally if I had to tow the trailer on the interstate or for longer distances, I'd get a full size truck. I wouldn't want to put that kind of wear and tear on the 4Runner, and I'd want something that could keep up with other traffic.
