Tie rod ends
I found that the rubber boot on one of my tie rod ends is torn. can it be replaced or is a new tie rod end required with boot. I am not talking about the large boot on the rack. thanks.

Thanks to both of you. My Haynes manual does not show the boot specifically but the OEM parts guide shows it is necessary to get the tie rod to get the boot. I called the dealership to verify. I have been looking at various polyurethane companies such as Energy suspension and so far none of the ones I saw on Amazon are made for my application. I'm going to call 4wheelparts tomorrow. the tie rod end is $52 and the poly is about $8. just have to find the right part number for poly.

Well, here is what I found out. I could not find a specific poly boot for my truck on Amazon or on the manufacturer site. Then I called 4WP. Their tech in Austin said that the poly boots are universal in design. You have to get the dimensions on the tie rod end, a matter of two different measurements because it has a shoulder on it. then match up to the sizes on the poly website and then order. I thought wow, this is a common 2001 truck and seems they would already have this figured out. I will pull the end this weekend and get a measurement. Nothing is ever easy.

OP,
Been there/done that on a '97 Tacoma 4WD. The Energy Suspension 9.13101R generic poly tie rod end dust boot did not seal well enough to be water-tight or dust proof. Even if you use RTV to seal the poly boot to the tie rod, it will not keep water/dust out for long. The tie rod moves too much at too great an angle in it normal range of motion. If the tear in the OEM boot is not too large, degrease the OEM boot & seal with RTV for a temp. fix. Then when you have the time, get a new OEM tie rod end from one of the factory Toyota parts dealers for about $40 plus shipping & put that problem in the rear view mirror. .02
