temperature control problem

i have a '97 4runner with a heat issue. when i slide my heat control lever on the dash to cold it slides over and makes a subtle whomp noise. however, when i slide it back to hot there is no noise and no heat comes out. sometimes i can force the slider to the right and hear the noise and get heat but not always.

i know my next step is to take off the faceplate that covers the controls but i'm wondering what the soultion is? maybe a good squirt of WD-40 or is there a spring that needs to be replaced.

thanks.

Well, on my truck the cable from that lever goes through the firewall to a turning mechanism located in the middle and at the top of the firewall. Have some one move the lever as you look at it and you might be able to see the problem. I'm guessing yours is a V6 too?
