Supercharger for 3.4 V6

Do you need to get an exhaust system or anything else with this? My dad is looking to supercharge his 2001 3.4 liter V-6 4x4 Tundra.....and I was wondering if you need to do any other mods with this

The one I am looking at the TRD one
thx

No, you don't need exhaust. However, there can be a ping (detonation) problem on some (most) engines. Therefore, I suggest having a gander over at gadget's site.

www.gadgetonline.com

To be safe, your dad will most likely want to get the URD kit. However, some have had luck with no fuel/timing modifications, but it is rare.

I would avoid jumping into the SC'r until your dad knows what he is getting in to. He will need to upgrade the VB on the tranny too, assuming its an Auto.

Keep reading and asking questions and your dad will be far better off when he gets it!

OK, clutch then.

If he takes it easy, then it should last.

I just had my S/C installed by the Toyota dealer about 36 hours ago (completely stock engine).....the dealer also installed a cooler thermostat and some different spark plugs (and he did the timing chain replacement on my 100k mile engine) . So far, no ping - unbelievable throttle response and absolutely no regrets in getting the S/C.

I think the fact I don't have any "air flow" mods such as aftermarket filters or the deck-plate mod means the stock fuel system has an easier time keeping up with the increased demands. I actually bought the S/C for towing my trailer so I may end up with pinging issues while pulling up a hill - but so far this is the best mod made to the 4runner.

My T100 with the 3.4 is equipped with the TRD supercharger and a larger tranny cooling pan. I've read much about the URD kit, 7th Injectors, etc., but I guess I've been lucky with my SC, no additional mods necessary. No pings or high RPM lean out for me. However, if a problem does arise with mine, I would likely go with the URD kit to help. Gadget seems to have a good product and a great reputation from what I've read.

I did originally have some complaints about the initial throttle response and a slight lag before it hit 2800RPM's. Turns out I had a few leaks in my exhaust system that I couldn't hear over the whine of the supercharger. Added a new 2.5 inch pipe and after a few miles the throttle response was much better. I wouldn't go with a larger than 2.5" exhaust if he gets the SC. Proper backpressure with the SC seems to be a good thing.

If he doesn't mind coughing up the bucks, I think your Dad would be very happy with a supercharged Tundra -

After installing my S/C, I was getting pinging at LRPM/HG. So I changed to the IK20 plugs which are one step colder and the pinging stopped. I had an intake system, but removed it before the S/C was installed. If I am going to do anyting else, it will prob be an exhaust system before a fuel mod because it seems to be running fine.

It should also be noted that relying on sound alone to determine a lean condition on a Supercharged engine is risky. A good A/F meter and EGT gauge would be a VERY smart idea too.

ditto. You can't hear a piston melting

Ah jeez....now I'm starting to get worried about "ping" (in fact, I may be worrying so much that I'm starting to hear it from my engine) so I just ordered the URD S/C kit. It's expensive but it is still cheaper than therapy to deal with my "phantom ping" phobia.
