Angry Starter loose on motor

My truck's starter wasn't engaging the flywheel, indicated by a grinding noise when I try to start it. So I go to hit the starter and I find its loose! Dunno what kind of stupid mofo worked on this thing but to leave the starter loose on the motor ranks pretty far up there. I can't tell which bolts are missing, but I was hoping someone might know the sizes of the bolts that hold the starter in. Thanks...

EDIT: it was the bottom bolt...of course.

Hmmm sizes I dont know, but I was the same as you a while back. Went to take the gearbox off and found 5 of the 8? bolts holding the bellhousing werent tight at all.

Worse of all the goon who had 'put back' the gearbox last year after a new clutch, had cross threaded the upper starter bolt and the bottom one was little more than hand tight. Cross threading the upper bolt meant it was useless coz the bolt has to be wound in totally to pull the starter up against the bell.
In the end I put an undersized bolt thru the hole and tightened a nut onto the end of it, lovely.

I had the same deal. When my rebuilt engine went in the guy only put one bolt of two back in and a year later it popped out. Took me an hour to get the one bolt back in, still need to get the other back in...

PAIN IN THE A$$!

I just took the top bolt out and matched it up with one at the parts store. The previous owner agreed to put a new clutch in the truck b4 I bought it, and I found one of his snap-on sockets and a bolt with some messed up threads on it chilling underneath the starter. I guess he was having a hard time with that bolt too.
