Here's my issue. I took the Taco in because the faster I went the more the speedo started to lie. For instance if I think I'm going 70 i am really only going 63 or so. toyota says it's the head in the cluster. $350 to replace. i can take it down the street to some speedo "specialist" and he'll stick an adapter on the gear to jack in up from 30 teeth to more like 32. cost is $150. so i'll have a faulty head and a rigged gear. what would you guys do?

I'd rig the gear. Do you have non-stock size tires? if so that is probably the cause. That is a big % difference though...

Do you have bigger tires? That will make your speedo be off. If that is the case then you probably don't have a faulty head in the cluster. So to fix the problem all you should have to do is take it to that speedo specialist and let him put that adapter in it.

I think most people just live with their speedo being off a little. Plus it puts less miles on your odometer.

If the speedo being off is worth $150, then I would say go for the adapter.

stock right now. i thought maybe someone before me had rigged it for bigger tires but that is unknown. yes it is a big%. and it gets much bigger the faster i go. i called 4wheelparts just to get an opinion and they seem to think to replace the cluster.

unfortunately it is off in the wrong direction so i am putting on MORE miles.

I would definitely get it checked out if you are putting on more miles than you are actually going. If the speedo was changed to account for bigger tires than that would be your problem. You should probably have someone drive beside you or take a GPS with you just to make sure that your speedo is off.

I would just have that guy put the adapter in.

we did a few tests. toyota called and said everything was fine accroding to the obdii. i told them to take two cars and have one pace the other. he did and called back and agreed it was way off. he was going 60 and the pace car was only doing 54. the best part about all this is that the warranty dos not cover the speedo head unless it was damaged by cruise control. wtf? oh well. i guess i have better things to worry about. like that fabtech 6" that came out. it looks good. i think i may go with it.

so i call the speedo shop and they're thinking that it is no way the head in the cluster. they say something is wrong in the back. so i call toyota and they said ok we'll waive all fees associated with this diagnostic if you take it to them and they do their diagnostic. if they're right i can birng it back to toyota and they'll fix it under warranty. crazy what you have to do to get something fixed. although the toyota people have been very cool thus far.

not sure if this will help, but why not go with bigger tires? maybe it'll read correct with bigger tires, and it's an excuse to go with bigger tires.

believe me i had thought of this. however let's say i go bigger tires then the problem progresses? pretty soon i'll be up to like 60"
