Side view mirror replacement

My driver side mirror met up with an oncoming van yesterday. His completely shattered (it was a Ford), mine is intact, scuffed up the finish a little, but shattered the mirror. Can I replace the glass only or do I need to replace the whole assembly? What are my options besides the dealer route? It's a 97 Limited, black finish, power mirrors. Thank you in advance.

My bet is on the whole assembly, but i don't know for sure.

I was just going to suggest maybe retrofitting the heated side mirrors (99-02 mirrors) if you had the choice or would want to. Best bet would be to call a toyota dealer to see if they have the part number just for the glass.

Ritzy might be able to source some mirrors out for you with all the 3rd gen runners he comes across- i only live about 40 miles north of him and can't find ONE in a junk yard!

good luck.

The mirror can be bought seperately. Check www.toyotapartsales.com and etc. They seem to run around $26.

Heres a TSB to change them...

Hey, many thanks Godzilla for the info. The TSB is a tremendous help. Can you verify the website? (toyotapartales.com) It doesn't seem to work as my browser says the site doesn't exist. Thanks again!

Well folks, I'm not having any luck with these websites. Any suggestions? I tried adding the "s" and tried www.trademotion.com. Maybe their site is down for maintenance. Can anyone else get on there?

I really appreciate the help. I'm having the same trouble getting to the catalog sites. Probably down for maintenance or upgrades. I'll check back later.

Call me on monday at 800-782-0682. I can find a used black one for you for cheaper than the dealer.

They are pretty tough to find given how hard they are to buy. But I can locate him one, most likely in OR that wont cost too much.

FWIW:

Glass Only Left 96-99 $37.39 $26.53
Mirror Assy Black Left 97-98 $218.26 $154.84

If you go the glass only route, check to make sure the mirror servos are not broken first. If there are broken pieces in there, replacing the glass wont do you any good.

Thanks! The mirror assembly seems to be operating properly... I've got left/right and up/down movement. Do you sell the glass or is this pricing from the above mentioned website? You have two different costs, what's the difference? Besides $10.86.

Thanks everyone for the help! Finally had time this morning to jump on www.toyotapartsales.com and find the glass replacement. Going to order and put this to rest.

Can anyone tell me what is the actual difference between the following parts referenced in http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/2000/Serv...ce%20Parts.pdf

This document lists the following mirror glass part numbers for a 1999 4Runner...

87947–35230 (LH)
87947–35740 (LH) Heated

One part is for a non heated mirror and the other is for a heated mirror. In my case I have broken glass but the rest of the mirror including the heating element look to be good. So can I use the "non heated" part number with my existing heating element (and save myself about $20) or is there some other difference that would prevent this?

Thanks,
Ken.
