seeking PCV removal advice

hi all. i'm pretty new to the forum and have a 93 v6 4runner w/116k on the orig engine.

anyone have any tips on removing a stuck PCV valve? the hose is rock-hard and the whole unit just doesn't wanna budge.

any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

Ok, this one is tricky. To get the hose off. Get some pliers and a chisel. Grab the hose and use the chisel to slide it off the pcv valve. Then do the same with the pcv valve its self. It's very hard and a major PITA. Hope that helps

thanks for the advice oly884!

so i guess i should also order a new pcv hose and grommet to go with the new pcv valve i have sitting here, huh?

any other hidden "gotchas" i should watch out for? my mechanic mentioned possibly having to remove the manifold (?!)

thanks a lot!

those suckers really get in there. i'd replace the grommet at the same time, they usually break when you replace the valve anyway and they only cost 2 bucks or so at schucks

i got mine out by grabbing it near the base with vise grips, then sticking a screwdriver under them and giving it a karate chop

I don't think that you'll have to remove the manifold for anything. The grommet will most likely need replacement, I used my old hose, as long as it stays in tact then it should be fine. Just make sure that you clean the hose out. there is a BUNCH of crap that gets clogged in there. Mine was actually completley bocked after 140,000 miles of use (a little over due). Anyways good luck with the pcv valve and just pm me if you have any more questions.

Well, I went to replace it. I unplugged the hose that goes to the top of the valve cover. So there is a plastic tube that comes out of the valvecover. Where is the valve? What am I missing?

The tube that protrudes from the valve cover IS the VALVE.
Make sure you're on the passenger side under the intake plenum.

I did this job a long time ago and it took me forever. It's such a pain in the ass and you HAVE to replace the gromet. You'll destroy it getting the thing out.

Good luck, use pliers and little picking tools if you can. DO NOT drop the gromet pieces into the valve train.

Oh, I was on the driver's side valve cover. Man, this is really starting to sound like a PITA to do. Since I don't have the gromet, I'll do this some other time. Besides it's too hot outside.

Maybe if I have to have my injectors serviced I'll do it then. I guess I'll just let the $7 sit in my toolbox for a while.

Thanks for the help. Maybe it's time for a nap.

On my V6, I removed the intake manifold to remove the PCV. Not sure if this was entirely necessary, but it certainly made PCV removal MUCH easier. I wish I was at home and I could upload some pics showing where the valve is and all hoses blocking it with the intake manifold on. I'll just say though that the PCV is on the passenger side valve cover towards the cab. The valve is basically buried behind all the little vac hoses. BTW, once I got the intake manifold off, the PCV came off no problem. Also gave me a chance to clean some of the grime out of the intake. If you go this route, you might need new TB to intake and intake to head gaskets since the old ones can get ruined in the process. Also, don't forget to label the 10,000 different hoses that attach to the intake so you can put it all back together right.

Removing the intake plenum isn't exactly easy although it will make the pcv removal a peice of cake, personally it's much more work than needed. I've removed the plenum a few times and it's just time consuming. The first time that I took off the pcv valve I didn't damage the grommet at all, but having one on hand isn't a bad idea.

Whats a "grommet," is it the thing that hods the hose onto the PCV valve, or is it a rubber washer that goes in between the valve and the intake?

I'm confused.

Thanks,
Chris

The grommet is a little piece of rubber that, if i remember right, is in the shape of a top hat. However the 'top' of the top hat is open. You insert the top hat upside down so that the base of the hat is sitting on the valve cover.

The pcv valve then inserts into this for a tight seal.

just use the vise grip trick and you shouldn't have to worry too much -- unless you have a 24 year old grommet that looked like it was made of hard plastic and snap it off in the valve cover...thank god for a flashlight and a pushbutton claw grabber to get the broken piece out
