Repair question: 2nd gen suspension..poop
< rant >
Got the Revo's mounted today but they wouldn't align the truck.
I need:
Pitman arm
Idler arm (they won't rebuild it?)
Wheel bearings replaced ($455?!?!)
Tie rod ends
Total: $1300
I knew I had a toe-in issue, my front yokohama's were badly cupped and they howled quite a bit.
They mounted the tires backwards....white letters out, I had completely forgotten to tell them I prefer black walls out....and they had neglected to ask.
170K miles, haven't offroaded in TOO long. 94 manual SR5
Does this sound reasonable? I pulled the truck out of there and am having a second, trustworthy place give me a second opinion (but no Hunter machines there). I just hope I don't lose a wheel during the wait!
< / rant >
Despite monthly wax jobs, a lovely rust hole has developed on the rear passenger door along a seam. The bottoms have slowly begun to be eaten too. Gotta love salty northern winters.
*sigh* Good grief. Anybody know about fabricated door skins?
Phew, I feel better now....thanks for listening docs.

$450 for new wheel bearings is ridiculous.
Rebuild the idler arm with new bushings/seals by yourself (do a search on here for more info).
I would definitely some second/third/fourth opinions.

Check a local auto parts store for some Timken bearings... The dealer wants stupid money for them.. Also, you may only need to clean and re-pack them not replace them.. They are adjustable for tension if they are not worn.. idler arm rebuild is easy if the ball joint half is good.

IIRC, you are in Madison, right?
I am done with exams next Monday afternoon. If you want to try and do this, I am game to help out. Shoot me a PM or something if you want to.
If that blows, Baraboo is just a shot up the road and I have a shop that I trust to deal with my truck when I can't. Let me know if this matters at all.
I have not done any of the stuff that you mentioned or paid anyone else to do it, so I am of little help there.

Timkens, got it. Will call around tomorow.
Good advice CTB. Ordering what I need to tomorrow...love the DIY when time/tools permit.
Damn good memory Flygt!! Feels like years since I've BS'd with you folks on the old board. We should plan on meeting up one of these days and hitting a trail or two. If it's near trout water, even better.
I appreciate the offer on the shop and may take you up on it. We'll see what the boys in the mom & pop outfit I like have to say tomorrow. Good guys, should have gone there first.
Goodwrench used to do great stuff, for next to nothing but they've lost their best Toyota mechanic and the service manager is...different now.
I guess it's not bad for 170K if everything really is shot. Wear and tear stuff...trail rides, etc. Just sticker shocked.

Not too many cheeseheads, plus I remember a lot of odd things.
Did you take it someplace in town here?
Where did you get your tires?
If you get fed up with the goons here, sneak up to Sulivan's in Baraboo. I even have my picture on the wall there. They always tell me that they hate when I come in because they do nice stuff like set my R&P's and then I come back with stories of what broke.
Goodwrench by the Belt on the West side? I had my tires from hell balanced there once and my folks got their Revo's there. Seemed like good folks, but that could have been because I came in and told them what I expected!

Exactly, damn good memory. I ate too many lead paint chips as a kid...can't remember my own name most of the time.
Taking it to Branch Street Auto. Larry and Otis....good guys. helped with my small lift, etc. I'll call Sulivan's tomorrow.
Revo tires: $114.75 each from Firestone at WestTown mall. I just asked for a discount and they gave me 15% off the $135 retail. No sweat. Liked my Geolanders a lot when they were new, started slipping in the rear recently when wet...not so hot when they're worn a bit. Goodwrench wouldn't come close to those prices. Liked the parts guy at Goodwrench, nice fella.
I'll PM ya with any news.
Thanks again guys, appreciate your opinions.
