Removing Harmonic Balancer/Crankshaft pully

Ok,
So some how the pully on my balancer has seperated. It needs to be replaced. Im nervous when dealing with any timing issue.

So, I have a harmonic puller; but Im wondering what I should do to remove the big bolt in the center? And, does this have to be done without turning the crankshaft pulley? if so, how do I go about doing that? I have a torqe wrench but never removed this before and wanted to ask before I possibly mess something up.

Thank you in advance

you wont mess up the timming as the timming belt (this is a V6 right?) is driven off a bottom belt gear that is keyed to the crank shaft. so even if you pull the pully off, the timming belt is good.

Just make shure you get the pulley back on or else.... (ive got a thread around hear of what happens when you dont)

It's 120 and DON'T USE AN IMPACT!

I chained a flywheel bolt from the crankshaft to the engine stand and it came right off using a 24" breaker.

x2. Impact wrench is NOT a torque wrench. Use the right tool for the job.

Definitely dont use a impact wrench. You dont wana strip your bolts or worse, the threads on your crank shaft.

If you dont have a breaker bar, use a length of 3/4" dia copper or steel pipe over the end of your wrench.

HUH??I know it is 213. This is a V-6 right.

Impact it to get it off--its-a-nice

THen i think i saw somebody on here make a pully holder out of a 2x4--but you only get so many uses.....then its worn out--but cheap!!

If this is a V-6 the pully/balancer bolt should be torqued to 213 ft lbs

Pretty close , the 5VZFE crank bolt spec is 217 ft-lbs now, old spec was 185 ft-lb. The old spec is not enough torque to prevent the bolt from working loose. Several folks on here have had major problems from their crank bolt loosening up and doing damage to their crank. Again this is for the 5VZFE, I don't know about the 4 cyl engines, the OP didn't say what engine he has.

Links to FSM pages covering crank bolt torque:
5VZFE http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/2003/Repa...imbel/inst.pdf

2RZ–FE, 3RZ–FE http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/2003/Repa...imcha/inst.pdf

Looks like the 4 cyl engines take 193 ft-lbs.

I googled a 4 cylinder and assumed this thread was talking about a 22R. I saw that bit about using an impact on the harmonic balancer and got excited!

I know... Don't ASS-U-ME!
