Angry Remote Locks not working

Hopefully someone out there can help me correct an error on my part.

I started taking apart the center console of my 97 4Runner SR5 today to get at the radio. The manual I have said to disconnect the battery prior to doing a lot of work in there, to prevent the SRS airbags from accidentally deploying (and I know of someone who go killed not doing this).

When I was all done, I put everything back the way it was before, no left over screws, panels, or connectors. I hooked the battery back up, the radio came on, car started, etc. Here's the rub: the power door locks and alarm won't arm from the remote any more. This sucks! What have I done and how can I undo it?

Some start to the 4th weekend, that's for sure.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure if this helps or not, but I had saved the info from another forum a few months back.
Welcome to the forum by the way!

This is from the 99 Toyota Factory Repair Manual

„h Start registration of recognition code
„h The vehicle should be in the following conditions
1. The key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder.
2. Drivers door is open (other doors are closed)
3. Drivers door is unlocked
„h Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder, then pull it out

Within 40 secs.
„h Press the door lock control switch (for manual operation) 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1sec. Interval
1. Lock ¡V unlock
2. Lock ¡V unlock
3. Lock ¡V unlock
4. Lock ¡V unlock
5. Lock ¡V unlock

„h Close the drivers door, then open it.
„h Again press the door lock control switch (for manual operation) 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1 sec. Interval
1. Lock ¡V unlock
2. Lock ¡V unlock
3. Lock ¡V unlock
4. Lock ¡V unlock

„h Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder.
„h Turn the ignition switch from on to lock at approx. 1 sec. interval 1 to 5 times to select the mode.

Add Mode
„h ON ¡V LOCK change occurs 1 times

Confirmation mode
„h ON ¡V LOCK change occurs 3 times

Rewrite mode
„h ON ¡V LOCK change occurs 2 times

Prohibition mode
„h ON ¡V LOCK change occurs 5 times

„h Pull out the key plate from the ignition key cylinder
„h When add mode or rewrite mode is selected.
Body ECU automatically performs the LOCK-UNLOCK operation once or twice at 1 sec. interval to inform the operator that either the add mode or rewrite mode has been selected

LOCK-UNLOCK occurs once indicates that add mode has been selected
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs twice indicates that rewrite mode has been selected

„h Press the lock and unlock switches on the transmitter switch simultaneously for less then 1.5 sec.
„h Again press either of switches on the transmitter switch for more than 1 sec.

Body ECU automatically performs LOCK-UNLOCK operation once or twice at a 1 sec interval to inform the operator that it has received the signal from the transmitter

LOCK-UNLOCK occurs once ¡V registration of recognition code is completed
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs twice ¡V registration of recognition code has not been completed.
„h Recognition code received first time and second time did not match.

If they are not performed, the mode returns to the normal mode, then start with ¡§start registration of recognition code¡¨.

Proceed to finish registration

If even one of the following conditions is satisfied, registration of recognition codes in completed.
„h 40 secs. Elapses since the body ECU response
„h the driver¡¦s door is closed
„h the key plate is inserted in the ignition key cylinder.
„h 4 types recognition codes are registered at one time.

Registration of recognition codes(add mode or rewrite mode) is completed.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot first thing tomorrow.

Is it better to post each question as a different post, or keep adding them into one big one? This is my first 4Runner, so I have a few questions (regarding purchases and mods) that I'd like to get some answers to.

Thanks again.

I'd post a new question to a new post as the one you have here may get more answers to your first question.
If you had multiple ?'s, it might get confusing.

Hey, I also cleaned up that text I copied into the post. Some of the letters came out funning looking.
I put them on a webpage, and it looks much better.

If you are looking for ideas for mods, visit our Tech and our Gear review section listed on the main index page to the forums.
Also feel free to look at my website under the mods section.
I have 4 pages so far of mods I have done to the rig.

Also visit the link on my homepage in my table of contents for "4Runner homepages."
I have quite a few links in there to people's pages, and a lot of them document their mods like I do.

Also Jalaber on the forum here has a very extensive collection of homepage URLs.
Here is his page.
They are listed in the Friends area.

Great info. I'll keep plugging away at it and see if I can't get some of the other questions answered.
