Propane Conversion Questions

Where can I find any information about converting a 22RE (fuel injected) engine to a “dual fuel” propane/gasoline system?

What would happen if you pumped propane into the fuel rail on a fuel injected system?

Could you change the computers algorithms to modify the injectors timing?

Anybody familiar with the software written into the computer for the fuel management?

A carbureted system would be easy to convert, but I like my fuel injection

You might contact your phone book and look for a local propane distributors and see if any list engine work/conversions. I had my old Landcruiser (carb) converted to propane at a local shop. You can't stuff propane into the gasoline system, it is a refrigerated, high pressure liquid and would not work in the fuel rail. You usually have to run an engine-heated propane evaporator to turn it into gas, then a low pressure, high volume regulator (like a big Scuba tank reg.) amd feed that into the intake, usually through a separate section. The propane feed pipe usually ends up being about 1" dia. pipe, sinc eyou are feeding in a gas instead of a liquid. Probably be quite difficult to make work with the stock ECU, probably have to go to some sort of aftermarket engine mgmt. system and make significant mods to the intake.

Yep, that is a good kit, but is not dual fuel. You basically rip all the EFI stuff off the 22RE and put a propane carb on it. The 22RE would do well on propane, propane likes a high compression engine. You could also get most of the parts for that conversion at many fork lift shops. Many of those forklifts use Toyota engines and many of those run on propane.

Also, you will need to check on emissions requirements in your state. Up until about 15 years ago, propane-only engines were exempt from smog in CA (where I live), dual fuel had to get checked (and was very hard to get past the smog referrees). Then the law changed and propane was no longer exempt. Not only that, but unless there was a factory-offered propane version of the engine in your vehicle, the conversion was not license-able for street use. That was what got me, had to sell my Landcruiser out of state, at a loss, since it was not possible to get it smogged. The stupid thing was that it blew very clean exhaust (one big advantage of propane), but since it would not pass the visual/functional test, so all bets were off.
