part time job + full time student = cant afford gas

i have a 95 4runner with the 3.0 auto, i get 14 mpg, 15 if i baby it. did the fuel filter and everything and now im all tapped out, i still get 14-15. the problem is that i spend more on gas to get to work than i make at work in a week! and im a student and i cant save up anymoney at this rate for the fall. is there anything cost effective that will help or am i going to have the sell the truck for a 4 cylinder?

Wow - you need to get a job closer or look into public transportation

Or look for the smaller wheels for in town and save the 31s for off road/ Thatll give you better mileage. Think skinny and small.

Sell it and get a Corolla, Civic, or similar. Then, when you get done with school and back on your feet, get yourself a nice 3rd gen.

Good idea 96 Runner. If gas is an issue because you can't afford it, not because you don't like it, sell your truck. You can't do much improvements to bring it into the affordable range. Sell it and when you finish school, get the 4Runner again. Or maybe by that time your tastes will have changed. As long as you get a toyota, it's ok. Hopefully, you won't get a ford or something by that time.

i refuse to get a ford, for that matter any american, i do love the runner but its rediculous for 14mpg with that little power! im looking over my options... thanks for the input, im thinking a corolla might be good for my purposes, even though its not "cool"

I bought a motorcycle. You can get one pretty cheap. I put in $6 worth of gas and it lasts me one week. I commute about 25-30 miles each way. Plus its so much more fun to ride then the truck.
Only problem is rain, and I guess you can get a rain suit for that. But other then that, your set. Insurance is cheap too, its like $250 for the year.
