P1700 code help

I got this trouble code and pulled out my speed sensor and noticed that it's wet with oil. its bright red so im going to assume its transmission oil.

So i cleaned it and dried it out and now its giving me the trouble code again. Any ideas why its getting wet with tranny oil? Is this normal or do i have a leak somewhere?

Has anyone experienced the same thing?

Speed Sensor

I know this is VERY late. But I just read this post.

That sensor is shoved into the tranny case/oil to operate as a "pickup" to the 4 rotating magnets on the shaft inside the transmission. This creates a signal used by the ECM to indicate speed.

Note the O-ring on the sensor body to seal it. Instructions for installing a new one tell you to coat it with trans fluid before insertion, to aid in sealing.

The CEL/P1700 code indicates that (#2) sensor circuit has the issue.
There should be a 10mm bolt and a metal retainer (that rides in the grove that encircles the sensor) to secure it in the case.

In the absence of the #2 sensor signal, the front (#1 sensor) signal is used to calculate the speed. The #1 sensor is inside the transmission and is not accessible without its removal from the vehicle.
