Anyone out there know the diameter and thread pitch for the 22R oil filter?

I have been using the Fram PH8A, up until I read this. Especially the email the guy got from an engineer AT Fram, who won't use their filters because they're junk at best. If you can get the info on that filter tho, then you can use it as you need...

i use the one that is the size of the fram 8a

fram is garbage though and i jsut use their part number to cross reference
however i currently have on a ford motorcraft filter in the size of the fl1a

Nice write ups. I use the PL 3001 (land cruiser filter) on my 22-re and have had no issues so far. It is larger and hold a lot more oil than the small filter that is recomended for it. Been using it for over 10 years and 150,000 miles. I now have 260,000 + on the original bottom end and it is still going strong.

I also use and haved used Fram filters on everything I have owned and never had a problem. Must be a disgruntled employee that sent you that email.

IIRC, the oil filter thread pitch is 3/4"-16. The seal diameter is about 2.5", but I dunno exactly. I do have it written down at home if you can't find that. The filter I use is the Toyota 08922-02011, which is about 3" overall diameter and 3.5" tall.

and coincidentally, the factory sized filter has a fram/other brands that use the fram numbering system as a 3416 filter

fram filters are absolute trash, but the PH8A is the same as a motorcraft FL1A and wix 1515. they're just a standard ford filter.

i use the 1515 in my truck, much better oil capacity than the stock sized filter, and works great.

Fram lists my filter as a PH3614, for a '91 22R-E.

FWIW the Toyota oil filter number for the F engines is 15600-41010. This is the larger filter. It has direct equivalents (since the OEM can be hard to find) of a Wix 51515, Motorcraft FL1A, Fram PH8A.

These all work on the R series motor, but I find that the smaller filter spec'd by Toyota keeps my oil pressure a little higher at high RPMs. The larger filter just never really builds enough oil pressure to make me comfortable. The 08922-02011 is a good filter, in fact it's a US-made Purolator Pure One.

But it is interesting that Toyota called for a 15601-44011 up until about 1988. This filter is large, like the FL1A sized filters. So I do wonder why Toyota switched to the smaller filter? Anyway, either small or large, stick with a good filter (Toyota, Wix, Purolator) and the R motor will be fine.

i think it should be your oil pump making pressure, not your filter.

Yes, the pump obviously pressurizes the system. I suspect that either the filter pressure relief valve opened at a lower pressure or just the extra volume caused more pressure drop through the filter (similar to a 2.25" exhaust reducing backpressure). I do think that the pressure is actually lower, since IIRC the sender is before the filter in the oil path.

Maybe it was just the Wix filter, never have tried the one Toyota specs for the F motors. That's gonna be a Denso, so maybe that's the difference. Anyway, with the Wix 51515, my oil pressure never makes it above 1/2 way and with the 08922-02011 my gauge will sit at 3/4 of the full sweep when I'm on the highway.

I'm not sure it's even outside the 36-71 psi range Toyota recommends, just that my gauge sits lower than I'd like. YMMV. My gauge and sender are not calibrated, heck there's not even numbers on the gauge, so who's to say that the real difference between 1/2 sweep and 3/4 sweep is even significant?
