I've been thinking of getting a rear IFS frame brace. I wondered which of you 2nd gen owners have them, and how necessary are they really? Seems to me Toyota wouldn't have neglected to put something that's necessary for strength on their trucks..

From what I've heard, it's a neccessity for offroading. I've got both a rear and an aftermarket front ifs truss. I wouldn't know the difference in ride quality never having driven it without.

I have a Rockstomper brace that holds on my bellypan.

I have not had any issues with alignment or other stuff besides a couple toasted idler arm bushings.

If you jump it, wheel it, or are just generally not nice to it, I would get one. Mine was a whopping 40 bucks.

Cheap insurance. I know that Scott at Rockstomper used to make them to the specific dimensions of your truck. It seems that every truck was different depending on prior use/abuse. I imagine he still does it this way.

I say it is very needed.. I had to bring mine to a frame shop to get the frame pulled after nailing my RT front tire..

I have a NWOR one and I think it is crap.. I had to spend a lot of time into making it fit (so I didn't lose a lot of clearance) In the photo, you can see how much I had to notch it and add tubing to allow the front diff to sit inside the truss. In it's stock form, it sat about 2" lower than anything else in the front end.. Making it bascily a boat anchor..




BTW, I think the lower plate is an overkill and I did not weld it on there.. I may cut it off someday for a cleaner under body..
This will improve the "driving by braile" method..

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I will look into getting one from Downey, I wish there were some decent off-road shops around this area.

What are people using for these braces on 3rd gens?

Plus, will it even fit under a skid plate?

I've not seen much mention of this in the past, and had all but forgotten about it until today.

Where can you order it? I searched, but only found websites for weld on ones from local shops.

I have the downey IFS lower truss.

Part number 42189 for 89-95

It costed me 39.95 two years ago. It comes with some very long grade 8 bolts and nuts.

I had tweaked my Toy swing arm during some moderate wheeling. It works well.

I was agreeing with Jake, you don't need the brace because you already have one.

Gotcha...I noticed steve and a couple others had beefed them up or swapped them or some such. I guess that was my initial time seeing mention of it, and your reason is my forgeting about it.
