How much oil should a 5vz-fe engine consume between changes?

When using non-synthetic oil, how much should be consumed during a 2-month, 5k mile driving period?

At my previous oil change, I put in 5.5 quarts. And measuring how much came out at my latest oil change, it was right at 5 quarts.

Oil I've been using is Penzoil 10w30.

This is the second time I've changed the oil since buying this 4runner, so I'm just curious to know what's considered "normal".

Thanks.

I was thinking about that as well, and also not all the oil has been drained from the filter too, so I'm sure that counts for some of it.

So basically what you're getting at is there shouldn't be any oil loss within 5k miles with respectively "new" engine and no leaks.

I just try to keep my eye on things like this to avoid any potential future problems...

well first off this is personal opinion but if it is a non synthetic oil i would not go over 3k miles with out changeing the oil. second the 3.4 v-6 perfers 5w-30. just to do a test you should change your oil measure how much 10-30 you have then put in 5w-30 synthetic (such as mobile 1) and see if you get the same or different results.

Bazooka: IDEALLY the oil can last more than 3k if you've read your owner's manual "Under ideal conditions." Also if he drives more city miles than hwy miles the breakdown in oil is not as severe (don't ask me why, I would have thought otherwise but info is coming from Bobistheoilguy.com as well as a representive from AC Delco when I was in school). Second it's a matter of choice what weight of oil you want to use. I used to swap to 5w-30 in the winter to allow easier cold starts and thought there was lack of worry about heat breaking down the oil. Then I realized our Southern winters aren't as harsh as the north winters and running 10w-30 is pretty much okay since I never had cold start issues with it. I run 10k+ miles on my oil with a filter change every 3k and a top off. BTW I run M1 synthetic.

Animator: I would have to agree with the other guys and say that there are some leftovers in the filter, oilpan, hopefully little ammounts of sludge, and a little is being burned via the PCV from the vapors (that's why I have a catch can on mine).

Thread hijacking on:
What I usually tell people is that synthetic IS a better oil, but whether or not it's worth it is up to you. When I was working for a shop, some customers would ask which they prefer. I told them the same thing my Auto Instructor told our class. "It depends on how often you want to change the oil. If you don't like to change it often, then syntetics is the way to go. If you don't mind changing oil then go with cheap dino oil." Me personally... I hate changing oil. When I was the low guy on the totem pole, I was the one that changed all of the oil in the shop so it made sense to me the last thing I want to do is change my own every time. I opt for synthetics and change the filter every 3k with an oil top off.
