HELP: 1st Gen Front end noise

Here is what is happening to my stock 86 4Runner. There is an awfully loud noise that is coming from the front driver side when the truck is moving. It almost sounds like a seized bearing (that is the best way I can explain it). Happens either when I have the front hubs locked or when it’s in 4WD (with or without the hubs locked). It is not consistent and goes away when I accelerate or brake (in 4WD). Once it stops most of the time it returns when I hit a small bump.

With just the hubs locked the noise does not go away, it’s continuous. In 4WD it goes away when I put it in 2WD.

It has never happened in 2WD.

What can be wrong? What additional steps should I take to trouble shoot this?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Sounds like you might have a bad CV joint, the curse of the IFS.
