headlight connector positive, ground connectors
does anyone know on the headlight connectors (looking at it straight), which one is positive and which one is negative, there are 3 connections, one on top, and two on either side of it. im trying to replace my HID system with another and it requires me to figure it out myself, i can do it with a voltmeter, but its broke.

You sure you have HID, and if so who put it in? If the factory plugs and wiring are intact, this should help:

ya they are HID, but the connection that i am supposed to make to the factory 3 prong connector is supplied but the wires are not hooked up. it is a black and white wire going to the ballast. if u look at your diagram, on the bottom right is the connector, thats the connector i am not sure about, the location of the black and white wire.

The headlights on your truck are reverse ground.
When you switch them on a relay sends power through what normally would be a ground on a normal system. Then another set of relays allow the different beams to ground to turn them on. This would normally be the positive side on a normal system.
If you lights are on and you meter any of the three wires on the plug all three will give you 12+.
You can get one of those waist of money head light harness upgrades from SUV lights. That will convert the headlight plugs over to a normal type that you can plug stuff into and have it work normally.

If you look at the connector as like what you said, the top connector will be the low beam (-), the left connector is the high beam (-), and the last connector on the right is the positive. This is according to my '89 negative switched truck that uses a H4/6054 connector like your '98.
To answer your question, if you have your HIDs hooked up to the positive and the low beam negative on the factory connector and then turn your high beams on, the HIDs will turn off.
You can do this and everything should be fine but if you "flash" someone, my guess is that the HIDs will come on too.
