"Gear Set Loose"?

"Gear Set Loose"?
Ok, so I went to the dealership because I was getting some rumbling noise between 60-70mph whenever I let off on the accelerator. Apparently they discovered that the gear set is loose in my rear differential and I would need to have the entire rear differential replaced soon before it dies.
They quoted me a $1300 just for a new rear differential. I think they are taking me for a ride. Anyone ever heard of this before?
So after hearing this I've been shopping around for a new differential and I can't figure out if mine is locking or non-locking. Is there a way I can verify?
Thanks for the help.

I would say that its not a locking dif. You would know because there would be a button on the dash that said r. diff lock. and there is a locker motor on the third member. You could do the work your self a lot cheaper. Try east coast gear and supply. just type that into google. But if you dont know what you are doing i would suggest taking it somewhere.
try searching on google to see what a e-locker toyota differential looks like.....

It can happen, but they would hav now way of knowing unless they pulled the 3rd... If they didn't pull the third, the only thing they could check would be backlash (by "feel") and pinion play... Get a second opinion..
