Where is the darn fuel filter on my 89 4runner??

My chilton's and haynes guides give me three locations and it isn't in any of them.

Behing the passenger framerails??? Under the intake???

i am pritty sure it is under the intake manifold...that is where mine is on my 86 runner

If its a 22RE, it will be under the intake manifold and rearward of the oil filter. Usually painted black, they hide real well under there.

I've only ever replaced it after removing the intake manifold and head while doing a timing chain. I figured I might as well as long as I was there. Can't be of more help I'm afraid.

I just replaced my fuel filter on my 89 v6. Mine was on the passenger side just underneath. I couldn't get it off... needed a shop to take it off.

go at it from all three angles. they are a PIA

check from the wheel well. Move the rubber skirt and it should be right there. Disconnect the battery because the starter and battery cable are right below it.

Do you think taking the starter off would help/be worth it???

Do I need to drain the fuel lines or something or is it simply a plug/unplug operation. Thanks for all the help. I think I'm going to dive into it today. I need to do the fuel sock back in the tank too. That should be fun also.

I don't think the starter would help much.

Try to break loose the hoses fitting bolts before unbolting the filter from the block. When you take the lines loose, you will leak some gas.......under pressure if it was running recently. That is why the battery should be disconnected...no possibility of sparks at the starter

Why change the sock? Have you had severe dirty gas problems? The sock only screens out the largest chunks of crap and is normally only changed when you change a fuel pump. Not to say you couldn't change it if you wanted to, but you have to drop the gas tank to do it. Best done when empty, since gas is 7 1/2 lb per gallon or so.

I finally saw it when the intake was off of mine recently. Yeah, see if you can see it when you take that fender skirt off. Good luck.

I have the fuel sock so I figured I might as well change it too. In a 4runner, there is an access hole to the fuel pump under the back seat. You shouldn't have to drop the tank. But Doing it with an empty tank might be useful.

I'll be sure to unplug my battery. Hopefully I can get to it through the fender....I'd hate to be under it when it is spilling gas. FUN STUFF

you sock is gonna look brand new, mine did, so I left it alone. its easy to get the pump out, just 8 screws on top of the tank, through the access panel like you said.

why are you changing the filter anyhow, good measure?

I want to improve milage any way I can and some of these guys said that could be a good source to check into. Plus my buddy used to have a 22re and gave me the filter he never used. Free part...possible mileage increase....Why not???

I seem to remember my chilton's guide aying I had to get a new gasket for the pump if I remove it. Did you experience any of that???

I swapped pumps. The used pump I had already had a screen on it. When you pull the pump assembly out of the tank, you will notice the screen looks fine. Just let it be if its not super nasty.
