Front left suspension noise

Just change the shock bushing, if that's what the problem is. Hopefully the stealership wasn;t talking about the lower control arm bushings, although my guess is they'd probably charge a lot more than $300 for that. Changing the front shock, also know as a strut, while fairly straight forward, is a pain in the a$$. Especially without a spring compressor, and if you don't have a torque wrench, my guess is that you don't have a spring compressor either. I always say, "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Just get a new shock bushing and pop it in. No muss no fuss. IMHO

Rob, I do engage my 4wd about once a month but unfortunately just to keep it loobed. I hope I can make it on a wheeling trip soon, work and family is crazy these days.
Birdman, you are right no spring compressor either. AS to torque wrench I might pick one up soon. I ordered the bushings and will try to replace them next weekend. Lets see if it will be a $30 job or a tow and $300 job once I start.

I might get blasted for this but I NEVER use a torque wrench. Well, almost never. If I were to do any work on the heads, exhaust or intake manifold, etc., I would consider it. Aside form that, no. I have one, and it's a Sears clicker type, but for the life of me I just can't get the hang of it. It doesn't seem to click or release like it's suposed to so I feel like I am over-torquing everything. I feel like I am more likely to break something off using this damn thing cause I feel like I can't count on it.

Just an update. The labor on replacing the bushing makes it just as expensive as replacing the strut/damper. So that is the way I will go on this (I did try replacing it myself but could not remove the old bushing).

" Strut Bushing: requires constant maintenance, makes annoying noises on bumpy roads, and for best results should be replaced often."
I should get that printed on a teeshirt for She Who Must Be Obeyed... LOL
