Engine Swap

Alright please excuse the errors as I am pretty tired at the moment.

OK, I've had the new tires on and the lift on for about a week now I need to start addressing power. I want to swap a bigger engine in and the 4.3 vortec is looking better and better. Since I have a 22re in there now I'm curious if the transmission would hold up if I bought a bellhousing from advance adapters. Anyone got any links to an entire write up or where to buy a guide to it or something. What I'm trying to do is find out the best way to approach it and acomplish my goal without spending rediculous amounts of money. I do need something more than a 4cyl.

From experience an engine swap is no easy task, I just droped a Chevy 350 in mine and there was a lot of planning, executing and fabricating. The best people to talk to are Downey, NorthWest Offroad and Advanced Adapters. If you are planning on a Vortec V6 Downey would probably be your best bet. NorthWest is more for the Ford 302. Currently I am using my stock 5 speed transmission but I drive the vehicle with a little bit of caution, It will be replaced by a heavy duty GM tranny.

What do you plan on doing as far as 4wheelin are concerned? Are you going to do any towing? the 22RE engines are very reliable and with some proper gearing and dual transfer cases you may have a more than capable rock crawlin machine.

Depending on what you have already, a 7MGE or 5MGE can be an easy swap. They bolt up to some Toyota transmissions, they bolt up to the stock mounts of a 22R with 5MGE mounts, you can also do the 7MGTE, which is the I6 supra turbo engine, good for 230+ hp stock.

Well, I've thought about a supra engine, I seen about 3 or 4 at the junkyard yesterday along with 2 solid front axles. The thing with the supra engines is that they are made for hp not torque right? Along with that the benifits to switch to a chevy engine are overwhelming compared to another toyota. I got friends that know chevies like the back of their hands, the parts are alot cheaper, etc..

I don't plan on doing any hardcore rock crawling. Just the hills around here and some mud. And I would like to have the ability to tow something if I needed to.

So far I have been quite happy with the Chevy engine, parts are real easy to find, Engine overall is very easy to maintain, and with the heavy set up that I have on the truck it can tow a pretty hefty amount with minimal loss of power or speed. Now the downside, IT LOVES FUEL. I average about 10.5 MPG and the range has been brought down to 140 miles, this vehicle is not smog legal in any sense so it cannot be registered in certain states and if you don't have the right set up for cooling you may loose the engine real quick. Overall its been really fun, but whatever you decide makes sure its what you really want and be prepared for some really, really long nights.

Supra engines actually make nice torque, you'd be suprised! Let me see if I can find a graph or two. The turbo engines make REAL nice torque, I know that much.

What all would be needed to swap it in? Considering I got a 22re now.

3) Bellhousing from N/A Supra (if you are getting the 7MGE you just need the stock housing) should bolt up. I honestly don't remember exactly what is up with the bellhousing, I know my 2wd 5spd requires only the N/A housing, there are 2 4wd trans (as I remember it) one's a G-something, the other is W-something. I forget exactly what they need. There is a website about this, www.yotapower.com.
