I am new to the US and to LA County specifically. As I drive the freeways and byways of this fair county I observe many dirt trails that often climb over some pretty steep hills around the canyons. As an example I passed one today on Thousand Oaks Blvd that looked very steep and a real challenge for me There was no barrier/fence/gate preventing access. I see these tracks everywhere. Can someone tell me if they are allowed to be used by the public?

Like, I don't want some farmer to pop out of nowhere and start shooting at me because I'm on his land. Likewise don't need any heat from the local enforcement agencies.

How can I tell if these tracks are free access, private property, government firetrails, recreation or protected park lands?

Where are you moving to the US from? And welcome. I don't know about out in Cali. but in Alabama folks don't take trespassing lightly. Just remember that all land is owned by "somebody". Whether it be gov. or private so just be careful if you aren't the one who owns it.

They are probably just fire roads.

Depending on where they are, you can get a heafty ticket.

i would think if you went to the town commerce or something, they would have information on the roads and if they're public or not.

Ok...thanks for the replies so far.

They do look like fire roads but they look too well used for that, unless they are being patrolled every day.

I might go to the local gov. office and find out. I'll also take some photos and maybe psot them here.

To answer another question, I am from Australia originally, in the past six years we have been in Hong Kong.

If there's no sign indicating they're part of an SVRA or something like that, I'd stay off. I've gone on some trails with no signage, and some cops sure did inform me that was a no-no. You'd think there'd be signs saying so, but no. Or at least, not always. So I've learned my lesson.
