Did the antenna mod today
Thanks bob for the write up for that. I woulda never guessed that antenna was even available for the Runner. It is Toyota part # 86300-89124 for 2nd Gens. Was pretty easy to install. The hardest part was getting the inner fender taken apart. You have to pull the stereo and everything too to hook up the new wire. My old antenna was looking pretty sad!! It was all bent and crooked.. Very pleased with my nice new straight one! It screws right out too if I need to remove it for a carwash, tree branch, ect.. Here's a pic of it
BTW is anyone wants to old motor for parts let me know. The mast and gears are no good I threw them away and I cut the antenna wire. PM me if your intersted.

Looks good.
I did the same mod to my dad's '96 4Runner. I had the same problem getting that inner fender off.
I will probably do the same when my power antenna dies.

2 reasons I didn't do it. One the previous owner butchered the factory wiring harness for the stereo so I had no clue which wire was for the power antenna.. coulda found it but didn't really care and #2 I hate power antenna's going up and down all the time.. call me strange just bugs me. This set up is much more dependable and durable than the power one.

No Power
I did the same mod a couple of months ago. I had replaced three power antennas (one power unit and 2 additional masts). The fixed mast is far more durable off road. Unless you don't listen to the radio on the trail, the antenna is pretty easy to trash.
Just my two cents.

Funny, I have been thinking the same thing this week.. My mast is sticking again and the new one is $40.. I have not had time to call Toyota, can you tell me the list price for the whole set-up.. I assume the cable is diffrent too??
PS.. notice any improvement in tuning?? I have always thought my 4Runner antenna stunk and am also curious if the non-power recieves better..
Thanks, Lee

Don't know what rig you have, but for the 2nd Gen the antenna assembly (base with cable assembly and mast) was like $26 from the dealer. I think the reception is better - if my memory serves. I went for 6 months without one, just using the CD. When the CD quit (later found it was from my kids feeding pennies into it) it was time for an aftermarket unit and new antenna. The fixed mast is a good bit taller than the 'lectric. I keep hitting it on stuff. The cable is attached to the base and includes the grommet for where it goes through the door jamb. You need to pull the radio also. Fishing the cable is a PITA, although not horribly difficult

UK,
Glad the mod went well for you. I'll add your part number to my write up for the benefit of the 2nd gen owners.
I read that you are on the way to do your duty. Good luck, man. Oh, take the old antenna, find an Iraqi soldier and stick it up where the sun don't shine!

BwaHaaa.. I forgot about you having that snorkle Corey... I like it, but what would I do to fill that big freaking hole in my fender??
Cebby, Thanks.. I like to painted parts as well.. They are there, but they disapear in the scheme of things.. I had thought about doing it to the snorkel, But Nawh.. I Like it right there in your face..
It is pretty funny, you really do not see it there.. all you get is a glimpse of the top scoop in the upper corner of the windshield and you can see the very top running along the fender, but it is basicly no there from inside (even out the door window)..
I am in south central Mass BTW..

Hey Corey.. I have a Surco rack on it's way for the top.. Going to clean up the roof line a little.. I have not decided if I want to put the Hi-Lift up there.. I may be getting rid of my cargo box in the back.. sniff I don't really want to but we kinda have to.. you see, the 4Runner only seats 5 and come September I will need to seat 6 if ya know what I mean!! I am going to look into getting one of those quick release Jeep rear seats to face rearward and make some new custom boxes that fit on each side along the side panels.. (The Jeep seat may mount to them depending on how that quick release is made) So if I do that I may make them go all the way upto the back of the rear seat (stock) and mount the Hi-lift to the top of one oof them..

Congrats on the new addition coming Lee
Sounds like you might need some 5.29 gears to haul everyone.
I like the Hi-Lift on the crossbars above.
Very easy to get to, and I just have to loosen two wingnuts to get it off.
Sounds like you have a good plan for the back figured out already.
I must say, I can picture Mr. Snorkel on my fender.
I almost got one, but did some other stuff first such as the sliderz.
Perhaps before the year is over.

the wife has a 99 tacoma with the fixed mast and I gots my 98 with the power one. do happen to know off hand if this would be a direct swap? if so, this might actually be a free mod for me. she wants a power antenna and wants me to install my stock changer deck and amp in her tacoma so...

keisur,
i think it would be a direct swap. pull down the fender well plastic and check out her antenna assembly. if it looks like mine in the write up, it will most likely work.
check out my write up in my sig line below.
