OK, yea, I admit it...it's kind of a dumb question, but I am looking for ways to completely remove the chrome goodies on my Runner. I painted the stock wheels black and it looks great on the red/maroon color. So that got me to thinking (which is a bad thing, I admit), about how it would look with removing all the chrome. This includes the bumpers, which is the most 'chromed' part of the truck. Most of the rest of the trim pieces are black, I'd like them to match...including the running OEM running boards.

So, I know that powdercoating would be the best, most effective way to remove it all, but besides that, what alternatives might you suggest?

I'm thinking of removing the chrome stuff, using a wire wheel brush to rough up the surface, prime it, then paint it black. Might be a pretty cool 'stealth' look. Think this would work?

I haven't committed to doing it yet, but I was wondering how feasible it might be...

Ideas?



BTW, what is the name of the red/maroon color on the 92 Runner??

I'm working on the smaller plastic chrome pieces currently.

The door handles, backs of side mirrors, and license plate surround are being prepped to be painted the same color as my rig (dark blue metallic)

I will also give my badges on the tailgate the "Bob K Black Pearl treatment" (see writeup in the tech section)

I haven't figured out what I want to do with the chrome on my grille and on the corner lights just yet. My hood is going to be in need of a repainting I think (was repaired after a wreck - lousy bodywork/paint job) I may add some louvers or a scoop to the hood and give it a low luster black paint job. Who knows...

As far as the bumpers, mine will be replaced with custom units, so I won't be doing anything to the stockers.

I de-chromed my rear bumper like a college student. Sand paper and spray paint Still looks pretty darn good half a year later.

dajabr....hahaha...love the shirt. I'm not fan of chrome, either. May have to pick up the shirt.

I wasn't sure what to search on to find other who share my dislike for it, but I've tried various combinations and found some VERY helpful stuff.

Cebby...thanks, man, that's a great thread. I'm not sure how much I want to invest in making it 'perfect.' I MAY just opt for roughing up the bumpers, prime them with black primer and paint them. AznSky has the kind of thing that I want which is conducive to the amount of work I want to put into it. Looks good...and what I like about it is that it can be touched up with a rattlecan whever needed. That may not be true if I have it sprayed or if I do it myself.

I was happy to see so many de-chromers here...! Good advice from many threads...

im also thinking of doing the same thing. how much would it cost to get the front and rear bumper powder coated, also thought of rhino lining it what would be the best?

I've tried to do that myself for my chrome grille. I'm good at fixing cars and not a body man. Like a DA I just cleaned my grille really good and painted over it with trim paint. Of course a few 'wheeling trips later and brier scratches it shows the chrome where it's been scratched. I finally asked our body shop tech and he recommended using some type of foaming paint remover to get the chrome off, primer it, paint it, then clear coat for protection. Haven't tried it yet but if I do then I'll post up pics and a write up.

of course you can just sand it down and spray paint it black or whatever color you choose..
if it gets scratched..sand it a bit and spray that spot again!!!!!

I de-chromed my rig and I sell paint kits (intended for rims) that will work on bumpers too. Let me know if you have any questions.

the chrome on my tuck stands out alot also, the truck is black with chrome front and rear bumpers..as well as the running dashboard. does anyone have a pic with the truck all black? i was about to do the wheels also but i need some clear guidelines also

i took off all my chrome by doing a satoshi mod black with herculiner and same with the bumpers but the chrome is pretty tough on the bumpers and a whire wheel didnt work. i used an angle grinder to scuff it all. in the places where i didnt use the grinder the herculiner is peeling off. i also work at a paint shop so i smoked my turn signals while i was at it
