Hey!
New member here. been lurking in the site for some time and its been more than helpfull, made me laugh, made me cry....
I've had my rig for about 6 months and I need anew motor for my tailgate window. Dealer wants nearly $500 Cn but I've got a line on a used one for $200. Been told there is not much stripping on the gear. Should I be going new or take my chances on the used?

Used, but you can get them much cheaper than that $200.

I got mine from TOR new. I think it was under $200. I'll need to dig out my invoice...

Save a bundle go to your local auto recycler or salvage yard and pick up a used motor. They can be bought in my neighborhood for about $20.00. Oh and one more thing you don't need to be vehical specific, ANY TOYOTA between 1990 and 1995. the driver side window motor is the exact same motor as the 4runner rear window motor. I have one from a 1993 Celica running my rear window for about 4 years now. Happy hunting

When I had my 2nd gen, my rear window motor will always go out on me, so I ended up always going to scrap yard, but mainly at the passenger cars since of the interchangeable motors.

Yep,like Dublin said. We replaced the motor on a '90 Runner tailgate with one from a 91' Camry, used the rear drivers side, since it probably had less usage than the front. $10 well spent.

Hey Thanks for all the info. Now I can spend some $$ on something I want, not need!
One more thing though, is it typically a straight fit, or will I have to McGiver it a bit?

Straight fit, be sure to spray the three bolts down really good with WD30 or other rust penetrating spray. Back off the bolts a little, retighten, and repeat. It takes some time but better to be safe than snap them off and have a bigger problem. You may want to brace the window up into place for when the motor is removed. Good luck.

Tear out the old window, strip down the tail gate so it weighs nothing, and get a plastic window made. Or is this mommas truck?
JK bout the mommas part, but less weight in the rear of our heavy beasts would be great. Cant wait for mine to die!!!

I agree with you sportJr the rear door is one heavy *** (be creative). You could cause a whole new problem without it, No weight in the rear and lots of wheel hop. Hmmm maybe ladder bars.. got a pair off my 70 chevelle interested??

I've called a bunch of scrap yards in the area and would you believe none of them have any early '90's Toyota passenger cars with power windows. Insane! The 1st place I called had a '91 runner but no tailgate........just now realized there should be 4 perfectly good window motors in the doors. Going to have them pulled tomorrow to see if they are any good.

Yah Toyotas seem to run forever, they are hard to find around here too. When they do get to the scrap yard theirs not much left too them. I guess we shouldn't be using all them old toyota cars for the ice races, but what else is there to do football seasons over. It's like a combination tailgate party/demolition race, fun, food, good company, and drink.

I took mine off last summer and it is no different of a ride. Now I do have the spare in the back so that does add a bit more than normal. But running the heavy springs.
If your worried about weight, I grew up in MN so I know your concern, Just add the sand like the farmers do and let it ride in the winter. You can always find a dumb kid with a wrangler in the ditch somewhere on a icy road that needs it.
