Center Console Cup Holder Mod Retro Fit On Pre "99

CUP HOLDER MOD RETRO FIT.
Thought I would clear up any confusion on this:

I did mine last weekend on a 98.

Be sure to get a handbrake lever also from 99 model onwards.

Do not bother with later gold bracket as this is not required. It moves the console about an 1" rearwards which means the shifter panel and console don't meet. If you use this part you will have to trim base of console sides which moves the whole console forward the missing 1"
I used the original console bracket and drilled new holes for self tap fixings.
As I said before DO NOT cut base of console sides, ONLY the projecting black fins on the base. This will ensure the new console lines up perfectly with the original marks on the carpet at the rear.

Also, I retained the original e-brake tub, but had to break off the cable retaining tab as it caught on the tub when lowering/raising the handle

When I did mine I used the cup holder/armrest assembly, ebrake (definitely need to make an easy install) and the mounting bracket under the cup holder. I removed my stock stuff, broke off the tabs on the bottom, swapped the eBrake and the mounting bracket and it bolted up perfectly, no trimming was required on the sides at all. I didn't have to re-drill anything. The original console mounting bracket is a different length than the newer style but you really shouldn't have to drill anything. The mounting bracket from the new console bolts up to the existing holes and is shortened to fit perfectly from my experience.

Well worth the $ IMO.

As I said Mr. Terminator there is some confusion!!
I purchased the gold bracket part# 89180-35010 (a waste of $35!) and it threw the whole console rearwards an 1" if i lined up the holes in the base of the console. I didn't want to trim sides to win back the inch.
It would appear that there are some variations in the hole locations?
It may better to purchase the complete assembly from one vehicle rather than source from different suppliers like I did.

It depends on the year, and model of 4Runner (the brackets are different) Limited, SR5, w/ or w/o heat, etc etc.

For example, i installed a center console out of a 2001 Limited in my 2000 4Runner, and the holes did not match up. I tried the bracket from a 98, and that was different as well. I have a bracket from an 02 limited I will try, but I do not know if that will work either.

As I suspected. Good luck with your 02 bracket

If you have enough metal visible on whatever bracket you use to drill additional holes for self tappers, it's a good enough and secure work-around

Seems that Mr. Terminator lucked-out with his install.

I didn't buy the gold bracket listed on 4Runners.org either. I have a 96 T4R Limited with rear heat and used all of the parts from a 99 Limited with rear heat. I wonder which year things changed, maybe I got lucky when the 99 parts swapped in perfectly into my 96. I compared the 99 mounting bracket with my 96 and the brackets are different in size for sure. But the shorter bracket from the 99 lined up the mounting holes inside of the console perfectly. When I compared the 96 and 99 consoles you could definitely tell the mounting holes are in different locations. Oh well I guess, each must be a tad different but it sure would be nice if we could find out what year it changed to prevent future confusion.

Maybe all the members that have done this mod could chime-in. I know Ritzy4Runner has carried it out.
You are right Mr.Terminator it would good to identify brackets with years etc, for other members planning on this mod.
As an aside, this is a great looking, functional mod.

Mr. Terminator, forgive me for asking but is that you in the avatar? I'm 6'-2" and my head rubs on my roof lining. From the picture you look about 8' foot tall. How do you fit in your 4Runner??

Yep, that's me at KY Speedway doing The King's Experience with The Richard Petty Driving School. Great day! I'm 6'1" on a good day, no real problems fitting in the T4R.

sorry to jack it, but I'm 6'4" and I usually need to put the sunroof cover open so my head doesn't rub/brush the roof. haha

I have a 1996 SR5 (5-speed manual), and the mounting bracket from a 2001 SR5 (automatic) did not match up

For those of you that live near or in Wilmington, NC the Cape Fear Pick N Pull has an oak color complete setup in very good condition in a smashed green Limited.

the bracket for a 2001-2002 is for the console box of a 2001-2002 which is slightly different from that of a 1999-2000. so if you have a 1999-2000 console box, you need to use the bracket for a 1999-2000.

and those are definitely different than the 1996-1998 4Runners too...

the 2001-2002 versions have the yaw rate sensor, right?

I found it is easiest to match up like models (SR5, Limited) and features (e.g. rear heater controls) and get all the donor parts, including the mounting bracket, for the best fit
