CB Radio / Handhelds / Snowboarding

I currently am using Motorola TalkAbout hand held radio's. These typically work pretty good, however there are some conditions and places that restrict thier ability. I am curious what you would suggest for my needs.

I am thinking of getting a CB in the truck, and 2 handhelds to have on person while snowboarding. I would like something with some power that could perform better in violent weather and obstacles such as mountain ridges.

I believe I would also need a FCC License as well? Whats involved with this? Fees?

Thanks in advance for your input.

No, you don't need a license for CB's (anymore).

I've been ogling the Midland 75-820 or 75-830's myself.
Word is they don't work all that well in your vehicle though.

But you said you'd have a vehicle system as well, so never
mind!

---

The Talkabout's FRS don't need a license either;
low power limits on them keep their range way down, but you already know about that.

---

GMRS has more power than the FRS, but is still allegedly regulated by the FCC.

The license for the GMRS system is more of a proforma
process on a good day.

FCC Info on GMRS

License fee for *that* is around $15.

More than you ever wanted to know...

---

you must be better on the snow than I am. I want radios there
that qualify as "disposable!"

If you look under the "Group Buy" topic, you'll see some references to two of the more popular mobile units.

You don't need a liscence to operate a CB. You can soup one up but its illeagal and the FCC can fine you a buttload for using it at a higher output than the standard 4 watts. The weak 4 watt output will do very poorly behind stone ridges, especially handhelds. They are basicly 'line of sight' operation range with those dinky 6 inch antennas.

Borderline candidate for being moved to off topic. I'm a little move happy tonight.
