carburetor help please
i recently purchased an 84 4x4 pu with a 350v8. i'm having problems with it wanting to stall out on inclines and such. i really don't want to sink $400 into a holley truck avenger carb. is there anything i can do with the holley that i have now to help it out any?

i'll have to try and find someone this week who knows about carbs to try getting it tuned in to see how it does then. hopefully thats all i'll have to do then.

Back in the day it was commonplace to modify the carb so that it would operate at greater angles and bouncing about on rough trails. THis is what caused the off road carbs to be marketed in the first place. You didn't say what brand it was, but I know that Carters and Holleys were commonly modified, and quadrajets too I think, the magazines used to run articles on stuff like that all the time. Didn't seem like it was all that hard either - something like a mod to the bowl vent and pickup mods and maybe something to do with the float... Can't say much more than that, I never paid much attention cuz I owned EFI....
edit: I did a bit of Googling and found tons on books available on the subject, but no how-to's. You might find something though if you spent some time searching.

its a holley 600. the guy just put it on before i bought it. i haven't had any luck finding anyone who is really all that familair with tuning carbs either. i might just end up spedning the money on a truck avenger after the first of the year sometime.

typical tweaks to make a carb run better on inclines:
lower the float bowl
lower your fuel pressure
vent the overflow tube into a catch can
run an MSD or comparable ignition(helps avoid engine flooding by burning more of the fuel charge)

thanks kyle. i'll have to give those suggestions a try. of course i'm all new to the carburetor thing though. how do you go about lowering the float bowl?

i'm not exactly sure on a holley carb, maybe try looking on google or at a parts store for a holley manual. from what i know about holleys, they're pretty tunable so it shouldn't be too hard

Lowering the float will lean your mixture, so make absolutely sure you know what you are doing before you do that. There are kits for the Holley that put a different float valve in there, or a spring on the float, I can't remember now, to reduce sloshing around in there from affecting the fuel level in the well so much. Go down to your local hot rod/4x4 shop and ask them maybe...

thats the bad thing. i live in the most boring place imaginable. there is no local hot rod/4x4 place around here. i might try to call holley up and see what all they have for it.

Dude, your hometown has a Dirt track....I know there is someone there that can help you tune a carb...as for the fuel your better off trying to burn that extra fuel then leaning it out...try a jacobs igniton w/4x4 trigger and some good plugs & wires
