Can't Afford Tundra brakes... Upgrade to bigger?

Here is my dilema.

I just bought wheels which I am very excited about. Except I just realized I had the 15 inch wheels which means even smaller brakes than I thought. I was planning on doing the Tundra upgrade but dont have 700 lyin around. What I do have is, slotted rotors for the 16 inch, pads for the 16 4runner rotors, just no caliper. I tried my hand at selling the rotors here on Yotatech to no avail.. instead of having them sit in the garage and take up space and not be put to use, I figured I could simply put the larger 4runner brake system on my 4runner. Basically what I am asking is... is it worth spending 200 now to upgrade to a less worse system. (The 200 would be for the unloaded calipers, brake fluid, and SS lines)... or should I just pool my money to get the Tundra brakes later. Thanks again Yotatech.

Get better brakes soon or you may be sorry. Either way doesn't matter but get better ones. I would figure out a way to get the money for the Tundra setup. I know it's been heavily debated but I love mine.

I agree. I'm working on saving up for Tundra brakes as well. Yes it's a fairly expensive upgrade, but I've heard nothing but praise about them.

Im sure you can find larger loaded 4runner calipers at a junkyard for pretty cheap.
I paid about $150 for a pair of tundra calipers.

So am I over estimating the price for the Tundra upgrade? 700.00 when the calipers are 150 seeems like I am doing some of the math wrong.

IM cleaning moms sequia right now, I could just......nahh

akebono pads/calipers & brembo blanks ran me around $500CDN taxes in & shipped. installing these myself sometime next week so 0 dolla dollahs on the labour. it shouldnt run you that much to upgrade over a regular replacement job..

as said, find some 16 calipers from a wrecker. but then you'll have to go up in wheel size. if youre not weighing the truck down with 33"'s you might not need the tundra upgrade...

I got the full Tundra Upgrade for around $300. I had Checkers Price Match Autozone. That way I got the 5% off the already cheaper price. Bought the Brembos off Tirerack, and got the loaded calipers. I did the 199mm upgrade, so if I ever went to stock wheels, it would be fine. Just an FYI.

Umm, here's a quick listing of SOME of the yards that have the 199mm Tundra caliper. I got my entire setup used from a yard and am TOTALLY happy. Price for EVERYTHING (calipers, pads, rotors, clips & shipping) $75.00 Pick someone on this list and call them, tell them what you need and make it happen.

Sorry for the crappy formatting.

Wow, whoever I got my prices from a couple months ago must have been a little off the mark. I think I was quoted around $900 from some place out of state.

$300 ain't bad.

Thats awesome! The only reason people are spending so much money is because they want new parts. Old rotor vs. new rotors work just as well as long as they are true. You can get by using used calipers but I would purchase a rebuild kit and rebuild them. Safe than sorry.....

When I bought the stuff I was assuming I'd have to replace the rotors and pads. What arrived only needed to be cleaned up and was in excellent condition. So on it went. Each to his own in terms of what people are comfirtable with. I just found a very low cost approach and am totally jazzed with the results. To often people associate used with used-up.
