hahahaha oh come on the water pump is NOT hard to do at all!! I can do it in about 2hours without air tools and never touching the crank pulley!

Put a little money into 3.0 (on the breathing aspects) of it and youll be happily surprised.

The 3.0 that came in my truck puked a second head gasket at 160K. I put a reman engine in. .30, headers, intake, exahust and the thing pulls HARD. much better than my stock 3.0 2nd gen auto. But the 4runner seems to have spun a bearing, or something and i just picked up 2 3.0's this weekend. will be building one to put in the 4runner.

neither burns oil, although they both leak (one from the oil cooler) the other from the valve cover gaskets. both very easy to fix.

overall i like my 3.slows thank-you-very-much.

ok working on the motor is a bitch thats for sure...I just changed my power steering pump and a two hour job turned into three days...don't ask....everything that could go wrong did...the main problem is the amount of space in the compartment to work on things....BUT....all that said...this is one of the most reliable motors i have ever seen...It's not the fastest, and its sure not easiest to work on...but it runs forever...the last motor had 235k miles on it before it was replaced and this one is now a 30k mile baby...so far I've replaced the shocks, motor (was new when i bought this big beautiful hunk o metal from my dad for a buck), tranny (another $3500 that i didnt really need to do because it was only the shift solenoids but i figured 'what the hell, i like this truck'), almost all the brake parts, radiator, water pump, timing belt, now its down to the ancillary parts and i am on a course of replacing those...

When i got it from my dad i drove it over 400 miles on a bad knock sensor to get it down here...made it no sweat. lol

These trucks are great...keep it!

davey in vegas

i picked up a 92 4runner 5sp 4x4 for about 4k. it had 120k miles on it and from what i had heard, it had plenty of life left on it. first thing I did was change fluids, put some nice gatrback belts on and i was pleased. It was faster than the auto86 broncoII my dad had. long story short, 3 months later it siezed. the #1 and 2 rod bearings melted. I thought it coulda been no oil, but i had a full pan of quaker synthetic. mabey a bad pump? anyhow, my only vehicle is in pieces in my parents garage. im purchasing a 3.4 this weekend and I pray I have better luck with that, if not ill post a link to a video of the explosion.

anyone need a good 3.o block?

Ahhah, so true, we're waiting for the one in my cousins to blow so we have an excuse to drop in a 3.4... over 300000 hard KM's and it's still running strong... even pushing 38's on stock gears (and it still does 90!)...
Mine's alittle slow... no low end torque, but it could be worse...

1. Looks great
2. 4wd
3. Resale value
4. Low end torque

Dislikes:
1. 3.slow
2. Auto
3. Slow rear windows
4. Cost to repair
5. Very hard to work on
6. HG issues
7. Burnt #6 valve
8. It's very slow
9. Torque curve - all the torque is at 2K rpms. So where is the torque when you are driving at 3K rpms?
10. Gas mileage

This long list of dislikes is why I sold mine. IMO the 3.slow is a bad engine and the auto just magnifies the problem. I felt like I was driving a liability by owning it. I was just expecting it one day to crap out for no reason. Then I would be stuck with a $3K repair bill. I finally decided to sell and I'm glad I did.

My 3.0 won't be missed.
