Ashtray CB Mod - Pix

Okay, I got my CB mounted into my ashtray. Im pretty happy with the results.

No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the thing perfectly to sit flush, but, its close enough for me.

I ran the pos wire directly to the battery, as from my research was the very best way to get a clear signal, with the least amount of noise. It was stated over and over how important it is to run the pos wire of any 2-way radio to the source.

I had to take out my entire console area, unplug some wires and cut out the ashtray backing. Ran the wires through the back, and grounded my neg wire to the sheet metal under the center console plastic area. The CB actually was pretty tight in the area where I mounted it, and just used some double stick tape on the top to make it really sturdy just in case.

So, with these new CB's, do you not get that usual static sounding crap when the squelch is turned all the way down? I enjoyed listening to the rednecks from god knows where. Now, I can't... I can only hear clear transmissions within range. Which I guess is nice. My buddy isint around to test the range on it yet.

Here are the pictures.

Nope, I haven't gotten my antenna tuned.

I haven't found a place to get it done. I guess I could stop by radio shack and check out their meters, but, I'll only use it one time

I went and drove around for a bit, and I was picking up a lot of stuff. Its great. I am super stoked!

nice install, but you are wanting it to maybe be more "flush" ?? Could it be from the connection from the antenna coax not letting you push it all the way back? I had this problem in my truck so i bought a 90' angle adapter and was able to get about a 1/2" more room to work with! So if thats your deal give that a try.
As for getting your antenna tuned.... it cant be stressed enough!! (ha ha just like fireteacher put it... 30 day return policy!! thats funny stuff!!) but anyways, you could actually damage your radio if you are using it with high SWR's !! get a meter and get them as low as possible, like 1.5 or less is really good!
by the way i am curious, what kinda antenna are you using?

Yeah, I already have the 90* connector... Since the install I've been able to push it back in a little more. The pictures make it look like it sticks out, but, it really doesnt.

I got a SWR tuner and tuned it myself. Ch 1-30 are under 1.5 while 31-40 are about 1.7.

Im using a firestik II antenna.

that is a good point by norflaballer!! where would I put all my stupid change at?? haha I did consider this very same intall in my change/ashtray holder but i liked the under my cd player mount. Well you have done everything by the book I think. Clean install and got the antenna tuned well, but if you really want to get the most outta your cb gimme a private msg and i will let ya know what route you should go. but if its just for the trail and maybe around town, then youre more than fine i imagine!

Its been about 2 months since the install, and there have been no electrical problems... Are you talking about speakers or something? I've never heard of that before.
