I can't shift my 1992 xtra cab sr5 V6 ADD into 4hi the transfer case lever moves back (but not all the way) but does not engage 4x4. If I pull real hard on the lever it will engage 4hi but only as long as I pull hard on it. The transfer case will not shift into neutral or 4lo because it won't shift into or through 4hi. I tried searching but didn't find anything. I just bought the truck 5 days ago and It's my first truck so I don't have any idea where to start. Thanks for any info I'm going to bed, I'll check in the morning.

lets start with the obvious. do you have oil in the t-case? doesn't hurt to change it if you do since you just bought it.

Today it won't shift into 4x4 at all. I thawed it out in the garage last night and that didn't help. It started Monday morning on my way into work, I was in 4hi when I started my truck and when I was backing out of the drive way I shifted into 2hi and it has not worked since. It feels like the shift fork is not connected properly like when you move the shift lever it's not moving the fork far enough. I don't think it has any thing to do with the ADD. It's 26 below zero now and my garage heater broke, so I probably won't look at it tonight.

When it thaws out some, I'd change the fluid in it. It's inexpensive and easy to do.

I recently mixed dino and synthetic tranny fluids and mine became very hard to shift. Almost took both hands to put into first. I've never had any tranny problems and change my fluid yearly. I replaced the fluid with all the same kind and its been fine ever since. I didn't realize fluid would cause that major of a problem, but for me it did.

I had a similar problem once also. Turned out the linkage underneath was all bound up with dirt and rocks. Crawl underneath and make sure the linkage is free of rocks, branches, debris, etc...

Thanks for your responses. I changed all my fluids to Synthetic today. It drives much better, BUT I still cannot shift into 4x4. Is there any external linkage that shifts the transfer case? Can I safely take the shifter out the top of the transfer case (from the inside of the truck) to check the shift fork? Or do I need to drop the transfer case to search for the problem.

Crawl underneath right about where the crossmember is. Look directly forward of the driveshaft u-joint. There will be a shifter-bracket lever looking thing mounted to the back of the t-case. It'll have a rubber accordion boot around where it goes into the case. When you see it, you'll know what I mean. Make sure the mounting point inside the boot is seated where it should be. Mine was popped out, but I couldn't see it under the boot. (Had part of a tree root lodged in it!) It's kind of hard to explain, I'll try to post some pics if you need them.
