?? about lights when towing

I purchased my 4 runner a couple months ago and I used my utility trailer for the first time over the weekend. When I plugged in the wire for the trailer (4 prong) the trailer lights came on (headlights on). My problem is no brake lights and no turn lights. I know the trailer lights are functioning correctly so the cause is somewhere on the 4 runner. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Matt

What sort of trailer wiring kit was used? For Toyotas, you need a special one that separates the brake and turn signal wires.

The trailer and the 4 runner have the 4 pin hook up. The 4 runner appears to have been factory installed.

u have wiring issues. one (or more)of the pins on the truck or trailer are wired differently. if the truck harness was wired up for a certain pattern and the trailer was wired differently this is the sort of problem u might have.
or u have a bad connection.
get a volt meter and test each prong when someone hits the brakes, headlights and each direction on turns and write them down then apply power to the different plugs on the trailer and see what they do.
i think u will be pulling and changing a wire or 2 hopefully and not rewiring. good luck

I will test the plug, but I think I may have it figured out. I called the dealer and they stated that the Toyota's use a converter for the turn signals and brake lights where the domestics don't. He said he has seen a number of converters go out and they are built into the wiring harness. The harness is about $30 which is not bad at all, but they will still probably charge me about $85 in labor to install. I need to get my timing belt done so I will probably take it in the next week or two and get both done at the same time.
