95 runner automatic not shifting properly

Recently my transmission has been acting up. It drives normally most of the time, but occasionally it will not shift up from a standstill. It stays in 1st and winds up then it will shift hard up into 2nd. Most of the time is when the transmission is cold, but it does do it when warm.
Anyone have an idea of what is going on. It's been a while since I have been to the forum. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I should note that I recently did a head gasket change if that matters at all. The trans. tv cable is adjusted properly.

I don't have an automatic and haven't in years...hate 'em. But my first guess would be that you have a sticking valve body. It might be time to swap that tranny fluid out. You also might try some Auto RX with the swap. I'm using it in my engine right now with good results...seems to have stopped an oil leak and the gotten rid of some sludge and varnish. It's cheaper than an overhaul.

I guess you checked the ATF level already. When was the last ATF flush done?

The tranny cable isn't adjusted properly. Readjust until you no longer get the bad shifts.

I have the same slow shift out of 1st when cold, as do others. Do a search and us "cold shift" there's about 24 posts on the same issue. No straight solution yet, but I'll still looking.
Let me ask, you mentioned the throttle cable, and that it's been adjusted "correctly". Did the trans shift ok before the head gasket change and cable adjustment? or was the problem noticed after the change?

Good Luck, or maybe try to develop the patience to wait for a warm up before driving, that's what I've started to do. After warm up there is no problem.
