86 4runner bad rebuilt 22re HELP?
I think I made the mistake of buying a rebuilt engine from Toyota 4x4 truck dismantlers in San Jose California. Well, the good thing is it has a 1 year/ unlimited mileage warranty. I paid 1175 for the engine and 500 to install it. They also charged me 50 bucks for some crappy asco water pump. Here's the story, they claimed before I bought it that it had been rebuilt by a machine shop and the cylinders had been bored over and had bigger pistons. They seemed to me at the time like they knew what they were talking about and my old engine was toast so I went for it. As soon as I got it on the highway after they installed it(I dropped it off at 10 am on friday and they were done by 11:30 am on saturday) it seemed to run warmer than it should, and didn't have as much power as I thought an engine with bigger pistons would have. It had no more power than my old 87 22re with 214,000 miles when I sold it. So after about a 25 minute drive when I stop and shut it off and turn it on again it idles really low and the engine shakes really bad, if I give it some gas it seems to run better though, still I don't think a newly bebuilt engine should do this. There is also a burning smell alot of the time. I replaced the radiator but it still runs warmer than I think it should, gets hotter going up hills too. I took it to the shop the day after I got it and told them all this and all they said was it runs good, the engine is good. They told me that I should replace my fuel filter because it was clogged. assholes So I gave them the benefit of the doubt and left. After 420 miles it seemed to have burned quite a bit of oil so I added about 3/4 qt. Now after 600 miles it seems to run hotter and hotter, but never getting to the red. Recently I have noticed oil around my #1 cylinder spark plug and now #4. I live about 250 miles north of San Jose but I'm now thinking that I need to go back there and not leave without them making this right. I'm just not sure what I should do, have them take it out and I could take it to a machine shop and have them pay for it. I don't know, I wish I never would have sold my 87 4runner with 214,000 miles and hardly ever a real mechanical problem. I know I wrote alot but this is driving me crazy and I always see people asking to elaborate so I tried to cover everything here. All in all this fiasco has cost me 2100 bucks. Any knowledge or insight on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul

It was Toyota 4x4 truck Dismantlers on Berryessa, it was 2100 dollars for an engine, clutch kit and a water pump. It was definitely the best deal I found, they sold 3.4 engines too but they were 1800 just for the engine.

Im not a mechanic but, if u get bigger pistons u probably need to get a cam to push them and possibly more air flow needed. That might be already taken care of, Its just something to think about. good luck.
